Our Grand Cru is not so much a style, as it is a designation for a very special Barrel of Monks beer. Every year we create a completely new recipe to explore the depth of flavor of Belgian ales understanding that this particular beer may never be made again. This year's Grand Cru is a Belgian-style dark strong ale. It is made with a ridiculous amount of European malt to give it the rich and malty flavor that is typical of this style. Aromatic notes of raisin, caramel and dark fruit are balanced by just enough noble hops. Five types of malt create a complex and delicious treat.

Dark brown faded body with two full fingers of tan foam leaving spotted lacing. Get the belgian yeast right away in both smell and taste, very airy, bready, soft, and dry, pleasant. Smell has cocoa and dark fruits to go with. Taste has an emphasis on prune with lesser of the other dark fruits, cocoa, and a little bit of earthy spice with plenty of malt backing. Feel is soft yet large, keeps the palate near the surface but has decent textures to keep occupied from the various malts and the expressive yeast. Something about this one is better than the sum of its aspects
