My first Barrel of Monks beer, courtesy of a Boca Raton-based Belgian influenced brewery. Pours copper with a minimal head. Many barleywines take that appearance, so no quibble there. The nose is potently boozy, but with the exception of a couple mid-can sips, the prodigious 12% ABV is well-disguised. Nice flavor--dark fruit including a raisin-like sweetness, plus underlying caramel. Could be better blended, as noted earlier with those boozy mid-can sips. But overall, a mind-bending, enjoyable effort.

Notes via stream of consciousness: Having never had a beer from Barrel of Monks before I was unsure of what I'd be getting in "Trip Sitter". (Have I ever been to Boca Raton? Ah, yes, but that was many years ago and long before they opened.) They have a kind of a Belgian themed name so I questioned, would it be an American barleywine? An English-style barleywine? Or a Belgian influenced barleywine? Well, it's mostly English in style but also somewhat American. It's a clear copper beneath a decent sized head of off-white foam. The aroma is mildly malty, grainy, and nutty with some light yeasty fruitiness that's mainly apple and sweet pear, and with a bit of alcohol showing. The head has fallen at this point but it still has a thin but creamy collar to it. On to the taste... it's rich, malty but not overly so, and fruity with apple, pear, sticky black raisin, light apricot, and guava - all of which thin the malt out a bit. The malt itself is a little doughy, somewhat beady, and lightly caramelish. The hop notes are mainly leafy but also a touch grassy. The bitterness is balanced and it's sweet upfront but mainly dry in the finish. In the mouth it's full-medium in body and smooth with a moderate carbonation level. It's remarkably drinkable at 12% ABV. With everything that I've already said I don't feel that it's as balanced as it could be, nor is it as well made as it could be, but it does have a certain charm to it. My most definitive judgement on any beer is would I buy it again? I'd buy this again.
