Bottle shared by RussianDragon. Turn back the clock.

The beer is copper orange with a small off-white head. Light haze. Aromas include apples, brown sugar, yeast, oranges, butterscotch. Sweet and syrupy with prominent honey character. Thick on the palate with low carbonation. Alcohol presence is tamed by time but the beer is still a bit of a chore. Best shared many ways.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Bell's tulip.

A- Pours a nice caramel color with a 1 finger thin white head. Nice waves of lacing along the glass.

S- Sweet burnt sugar and sweet grapes.

T- Big grape/vinous flavors, dark fruits, rye is pretty faded

M- Medium body, low carbonation. The 5 years has made this beer crazy smooth.

O- Different but very good American Barleywine especially for being 5 years old.

White short head. Collar. Nice alcohol legs.

I like this smell but it's hard to pick apart. Sweet, slightly oxidated.

Muted hop presence, slightly oxidize but still very drinkable. Almost a grape like quality.

Very smooth big mouthfeel. Yes. Low carbonation.

Enjoyed this one although I don't know how much longer I'd hold on to this, oxidation/degraded hop presence is creeping up. Thanks kawilliams81!

Poured into a snifter. 2007 vintage.

3.5 A: Opaque musky swamp water brown. One finger of frothy off-white head. Retention is mediocre, even for a beer this big though a short ring of lacing is left.

4.0 S: Quite interesting developments here. The rye has taken on the scent of jasmine and lavender as opposed to its normal earthy spiciness. I'm reminded of pork sausage. Any usual barleywine aromas are not present in this one. Pleasant and certainly unique.

4.0 T: What the fuck? This smells like pork sausage, but tastes like....a braggot? Yes, this tastes like a dark braggot chock full of honey. I don't know how or why, but it does. I'm also picking up the lavender notes again. The rye barely tastes like rye anymore. Plum fruitiness. Alcohol is very well hidden.

3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Could use a bit more carbonation, but its fine for how old it is. Silky, but lacking creaminess.

4.0 D: Very intersting beer that probably tastes much different than it did fresh.

Served ina snifter.

Appearance: Slightly dark amber, not hazy but you see the sediments floating around.

Smell: Light caramel, and feel of wine (duh). Wish it was a notch more potent.

Taste: Complex, comes off sweet at first and a finish of barley and caramel.

Mouth: Medium carbonation, after-taste disappears after a a minute or so, but definitely worth while.

Overall: I picked this up maybe a month ago (not even knowing what kind of beer it was) with dust on it and was thinking aged after all these years must be good. Well it well really f'n good, I wouldn't call it a classic but definitely worth trying. Salud!

From Secret Santa 2011.

A - Faint rusty red in color with a thin, fizzy white head. Beer takes on a golden hue when pulled away from the light. Very faint carbonation bubbles slowly drifting upwards.

S - Rather sweet aroma with hints of syrup and biscuit. A bit of rye spiciness sneaks in as well. As the beer warms a faint fruitiness emerges.

T - Surprisingly sweet on first sip, verging on cloyingly so. Faint fruitiness in the sweetness with a light spiciness in the background. Tastes become somewhat bready as the beer warms.

M - Medium bodied and rather slick. Carbonation is quick and rye leaves a rather dry finish behind.

O - I really wish I could have tried this one 2-3 years ago. Still tasty and I do like the rye finish, but the sweetness has become a bit too much for me.

Boozy barleywine. I do not know if it would have been less so not aged, but I think yes. Rye is still there, mellow because aged. Malt is there. Altogether drinkable with a big supper, however unexceptional. A big head that dissipates as it warms. Above average mouthfeel. Neutral coloured body. The edges of the barleywine were brought in, only a little bitterness. Some sweetness there.

Thanks to Bill Bragg for this one served in wine glasses at our BYOB dinner at Megs and Mads. Served from a 22oz bottle.

Going off of memorey at this point.

A-deep amber color with minimal head.

S-dark candi sugar lead the way and a bit of spiciness from the rye. Lots of barleywine characteristics and a hint of oak/bourbon.

T-Sweet candi sugar and a slight burn of the throat almost as if there is cayenne pepper in here. I could imagine the amount of rye in here and with Bill with me, he told me that they dumped 2 batches prior due to the fact that rye holds so much liquid their batch sizes were incorrect.

M-thick and syrupy, some due to age, at 5 years old. Not horrible, carbonation was less than desired.

Big thanks to ubufan2112 for this 12oz bottle in our trade from a while ago. My resolution for this year is to start drinking more from the cellar and this is perfect for that. Into a NB Globe.

A: Pours a nice copper color with a few loose bubbles that almost form a head, but not quite, a few spots of lacing are left behind even though there isn't much of a head. Really nice clarity. A fair amount of big bubbles moving through this.

S: Big, malty aroma. Lots of caramel and bread, no booze to speak of. Slight little bit of oxidation starting to show, but it works with this big malt profile. Smells like a malt bomb.

T: Interesting, lots of big time malts caramel and honey with a fair amount of bread dough as well. A little bit on the cidery side. Definite notes of oxidation, just enough sherry to make it noticeable. Slight bitterness on the finish. A touch of booze as well.

M: Very thick beer, incredibly thick, must be the amount of rye in the beer. Carbonation is on the lighter side. Finish is sticky and sweet. Pretty nice here.

O: I wish I could've tried this fresh, as it is a pretty interesting beer. There is no hoppiness left in this beer, just a bit of bitterness. Notes of sherry are starting to appear, but work well with the beer. I'm pretty amazed at how thick this beer is, pretty incredible actually. Glad to try it!

Tap at Armsby Abbey

Light creamy head fades at a med pace over mostly clear golden orange color.

Nose has sweet reddish malts, a bit syrupy, light booze and oak and light booze like bourbon, lots of sweet malts, light tart sour malt fruit maybe infection? -nope.

Taste brings lots of sweet fluffy malts, tons of red malts and crystal malts light sweet caramel and bourbon like flavors, candy and light syrup, light booze more warming and light tingle but too heavy, slightly creamy and fruits. Finishes sweet with more fruit, light booze, lots of malts, sweet caramel and syrup as well as bourbon like candy all linger with a touch of booze.

Mouth is heavier bodied, a bit syrupy, decent carb some warming and slightly tingly booze.

Overall great, nice malts, hints of bourbon and sweet malts booze has dropped out nicely but still lets you know its a big beer. Hops are all gone as well.

22oz bottle poured into a Weyerbacher Tulip. Bottled in 2007. Purchased from Bruisin' Ales about a year ago.

A - Bottle opens with a pleasant hiss. Pours a lovely burnished orange-amber with a beautiful creamy white head that fades to a slight haze, leaving a thick sheet of lacing on the glass. The age hasn't hurt the looks at all, this could be a "fresh" beer easily.
S - Big aromas of sweet caramel malt, orange peel hops, rye bread, and honey. Again, very fresh smelling, no hint of any oxidation.
T - Wow...this is sweet. Tons of sweet caramel and honey with a good amount of rye and more candied orange peel hops and a touch of pear. Gets better as it warms, the flavors become much more cohesive.
M - Big and syrupy. Seriously, this could go on pancakes. Sticky, with a full body and low carbonation. Alcohol really comes out to play, there's no hiding the +10% ABV. Definitely a slow sipper.
O - I was fine until I tasted it. Too sweet, way too syrupy. Curious what this was like fresh, but with 4 years it's just a cloying mess. Damn. Might have gotten through a 12oz bottle, but a 22? This is gonna be tough...

I got this one from Crazy Nelson a little over a year ago due to some unfortunate circumstances. I figured four years is plenty long for this one to sit. Review is from notes taken on 7/26/2011 and poured from the bottle to a snifter.

Appearance: Pour is a solid and bright coppery color; starts with a short 1/2 finger of loose, slightly off-white head and it fades extremely quickly to nothing other than a loose, fizzy skim; body has a touch of haze to it, but it's relatively transparent and shows moderate carbonation; lots of oily swaths and spots of lacing are left behind.

Smell: Not very strong, but there is a green fruitiness to it with a decent backing of caramel malts; warming alcohol in the back.

Taste: Taste is quite nice -- green apple acidity and tartness with a huge counterbalance of sweet caramel malts; very faint hop presence still lingers, but they're largely faded by this point; bit a warming spiciness to it and it's rounded out by the warming alcohol that is so well balanced with the huge maltiness. I don't know how this beer was fresh, but with this much age on it, it's excellent.

Mouthfeel: Body is medium weight, and it's a little slick, oily and sticky; carbonation is present, but still comes across pretty smooth; gums are left quite tingly from the bigger ABV and the belly is left warm from the same, as well as the acidity.

Overall: Definitely a sipper, I love the flavor profile and mouthfeel. I do wish the nose was a little bit stronger to match the flavors, but I'll take it.

Just opened the bottle I have been cellaring since 2007. Noticed the floaties right away after getting the bottle out. Not as noticeable in the glass, but I am not enjoying the look. Smell is quite fruity, with faded hops, citrus and a bit of alcohol mixed in. The flavor is similarly fruity, but with some medicinal qualities. Definitely has the apricot flavor mentioned in other reviews. Mouthfeel is thick, slick, but not too syrupy - pretty good. Overall, I am not really enjoying this beer too much due to the overly sweet and fruity taste.

Nearly 4 years old I decided to go for it during the epic weyerbacher tasting!

thick brown, though you can see some light through it, no head and a nice lace top it off. Smell is hopped for sure, but with a subtle sugary undertone, and a hint of alcohol too. Taste is not very strong at all. There is the natural piney hoppness you would expect from a barley wine, but not too strong, there is also a sugary, nuttiness about it as well. The alcohol is there, and that keeps this a sipper. It is actually nicely carbonated, and not harsh going down, has the warm feeling on the way. Overall this was a good brew, I would not mind having another and certainly kept me warm this evening.

a - Pours a hazy amber color with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident. Light lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of burnt malts, light fruit, bready malts, rye, and toasted malts. Nose smells a but burnt; not horrible but not the best.

t - Tastes of light fruit, fruity malts, wood, rye, bready malts, and toasted malts. A definite step up from the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation, with a creamy body.

o - Overall an interesting beer, but didin't really remind me of a barleywine. The nose wasn't great, but it tasted better as you drank it. Wouldn't seek out but would give another shot.

This beer poured out as an orange color with some sediment floating around in the glass. The head was white and quickly disappeared. The aromas here are interesting big amounts of rye on the nose with some sweet fruits in the mix too. Not really what I expected, I like surprises though. This beer has a big flavor to it. It's pretty hoppy and has a good amount of rye too, but the best part of all is the peach flavor in the background. Such an interesting twist. The mouthfeel is thick as well, leaving a nice coating on the tongue.

Just opened bottle from 2007, and it's chock full of little bits... very nice. Color is a hazy dirty gold, with a white head that has good lacing but dissipates rather quickly on top. This beer has a very nice taste... not too much going on here. I get the rye, but the overwhelming note is citrus orange and apricot. The mouthfeel is very thick, almost syrupy (O.J. consistency). This is like a fermented & carbonated citrus drink. Easily drinkable for the abv. Overall, very good effort.

Thanks to Rattle N Hum..a delicate orange pour with some decent clarity. 50% Rye and it shows. Even with some time on the bitch, it still reeks of alcohol and spicy rye. It's basically drinking a thickened watery whiskey, which is fun, but it's not worth what it's costing to be reminiscing on how this is true.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a hazy amber/orange color with about a half inch off-white head, and some sediment floaties noticable. The head went away quickly, but there's a good amount of lacing left on the glass. The brew smells like caramel, pears, butterscotch, and some booze and candied fruit. Taste is pretty much just like the aroma, it tastes like caramel malt, sweet booze, candied fruit, and also has a slight Mentho-lyptus flavor. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's syrupy and a bit sticky with low carbonation. The alcohol does catch up to you after a while, it's easy to tell this brew is boozy. Overall I think it's a decent enough brew. Not impressive, but not bad either.

12oz bottle, recently found on the shelf at Capones and allowed to warm before being poured into my Bruery tulip glass.

The beer pours a mostly clear amber, just a little bit of haze to it. The ivory head rises to over three fingers in height and spills a little bit over the side. The entire inside of the glass is coated in lacing, and if the crown had shown a bit more stamina I'd say it was pretty much perfect. The nose is pretty much what I'd expect from an American barleywine with a little age on it. There's a ton of caramel/toffee, with a little bit of booze in the background. A slight, but appreciable spicy contribution from the rye is a welcome addition. The taste brings more of the same, with caramel being very much the front runner on my palate. As with the aroma, everything else plays an ancillary role. Alcohol though does make itself a bit more known than before. Twelve is tasty, but damn is it syrupy. I'm not sure if it's an overly rich body, or a carbonation shortcoming (the problem is severe enough that I'd guess it's a combination of both), but I feel like I could pour this beer over pancakes. With the expcetion of a a misstep in the viscous nature of the beer, Weyerbacher 12 is a pretty enjoyable.

12oz bottle via trade.

Cloudy amber pour with a nitro-looking one-finger white head that leaves thick foam and lacing.

The aroma is malty and sweet with a little caramel, rye, sherry, and light fruits.

The flavor is also sweet and malty with a caramel malt base. Fairly boozy without too much to it really. Rye, pear, and a strange menthol flavor.

From the mouthfeel of this, I really can't believe it's not nitro. Insanely full and smooth with very soft carbonation.

Overall, well, it's unique. Not a really big fan though.

Got this as an extra in a trade with someone in New England - sorry that I can't remember who it was. Served in a World Class Beverages taster glass.

A - Pours with late-rising white foam that quickly settles to a thin cap and ring. Transparent bronze color.

S - Very vinous and fruity. Lots of white grape, pears, and apples - all soaked in alcohol. It's very unusual, although I would attribute some of that to the three years of age on this bottle. Strangely compelling.

T - The taste is more in line with what I expect from a barleywine. Burnt sugars, earthy rye character, booze-soaked fruits, raisins, and a touch of cardboard and sherry oxidation character. Aftertaste is full of estery spice.

M - Body is full, chewy, and sticky. However, it finishes somewhat dry. Carbonation is medium-low. There's some warmth after only a few ounces.

D - While I probably could have finished the 12oz bottle on my own, I ended up contributing about half to a dessert reduction.

A: Pours a very warm golden orange copper color. Crystal clear with a few bubbles slowly rising from the bottom. Head is an eggshell color and very thin. What was 1 finger has now disappeared.

S: The nose is very reminicent of a Belgian quad. Alcohol soaked dark fruits. Caramel and spice from the rye.

T: Tons of initial alcohol burn. Lots of caramel
soaked figs. What ever hops were present have faded. Tons of spiceyness the rye malts really make themselves noticed over the pale malts.

M: medium bodied with tons of stickiness. As with eleven it coats every part of the mouth and lips. Lots of alcohol burn in the throat.

Overall: this thing must have been a real beast when younger. As it sits now. That alcohol smacks you in the face even after 3+ years. The rye provides a nice amount of spice. I'm glad to be able to try this one time only offering from one of my favorite breweries.

Pours a dark copper with a thin white head that sticks around the edges. The smell has some sweet fruit notes like candied fruit. A heavy dose of alcohol comes through in with the smell. The taste starts with a sweet fruit flavory comes with some mild pepper-like flavor with a heavy alcohol finish that clears the sinuses. The aftertaste lingers with the fruit and strong alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium, a smooth beer, low carbonation. I couldn't have more than one of these, the alcohol flavor is extremely powerful, but still an enjoyable barleywine.

Bright honeyed orange in colour, brilliant clarity. The quarter inch of off-white retains decently and laces the glass. There's rye bread and brown sugar in the aroma, as well as some dried fruit. It also has a boozy, alcoholic quality to it. There's a spicy edge to the flavour, and it tastes fruity; like raisins or prunes. There's a mild nuttiness similar to almonds and just the slightest hints of butterscotch and vanilla. There's a very faint woody bitterness in the finish. The alcohol and residual sweetness are noticeable, but neither are overpowering. The spiciness reminds me of the one roggenbier I've had, but seriously amped up. Full bodied with a sticky, syrupy mouthfeel and velvety carbonation. I was warned that this is a bit of a booze bomb, but maybe the three-plus years its spent in the bottle has mellowed it out a little, taming the alcohol somewhat. I found it pretty easy to make my way through a bomber of this aged barleywine. I feel like I lucked out finding a stray bottle of this in a convenience store back in June of this year. Delicious.
