The beer pours a reddish-caramel color with a tan head. The aroma has a lot of toffee and raisin notes up front. As the beer warms I start to get more dark fruit and cherries in the aroma, as well as some brown sugar-like sweetness. The flavor is more complex. I get some nice spices, with cinnamon really coming through strongly. I also get some toffee and caramel, as well as some cherries, raisins and other dark fruit. Once again the brown sugary sweetness comes through nicely, as does a hint of alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

poured into a tulip.

Appearance: murky mahogany red/brown bodied beer with a generous 2 fingers of tanish white head. Lacing is very thick on this beer.

Smell: I dont even have to get my nose close to this beer and I smell lots of banana. Its also spicy and fruity. Tart cherries, cranberries, and hints of dark fruits. Nice complexity to the nose.

Taste: Starts out malty with mild notes of caramel and toffee; u also get a nice spicy note from the belgian yeast. Surprised by 2 things from this beer... I don't taste hardly any bananas with such a prevalent nose you would think that bananas would be all over this beer & I am tasting some hints of smoke in this beer which is not a common flavor in a dubbel. Mid-palate I get some sweetness of raisins, figs, molassess, cherries, and dates. Finishes with some booze and astrigency. The finish hurts the overall taste of this beer in my opinion.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. The beer is nicely carbonated for this style. The beers has some creaminess to it and it finishes dry.

Overall: This is the darkest dubbel that I have tried. I am fairely new to this style, but it seems to be a decent beer. Weyerbacher does a decent job on this belgian style of beer.

A- Pours a dark reddish brown color with a nice fizzy tannish head. Head has really good retention and leaves a bit of spotty lacing here and there.

S- Smell is pretty sweet overall. Picking up a lot of brown sugar, candied sugar and burnt sugar. Along with quite a bit of dark fruits, touch of yeast and a bit of bready malts.

T- This one follows the nose quite well. A ton of sweetness coming through. Dark fruits come through well, yeast and bready malts.

M- Medium in body and a bit higher in carbonation.

O- Nothing terrible or awesome. I think there are a lot better of the style out there.

extemely dark brown, opaque with a huge billowing tan head that literally fell over the sides of the glass. I did not think it would actually ever go down. This really looked like a serious beer. It finally settled down but left a ton of lace down the glass for the rest of the session. First whiff of the aroma was very fruity, albeit dark. Hints of apricots and raisins, along with some plum and a touch of alcohol were all readily present. The distinctive aroma of Belgian yeast was ever so present as well. Very nice, floral aroma. First sip was delicous. Very full flavored and lively. Lots of fruity flavors, again figs, apricots, banana, and a nice mellow spiceness melded well with a touch of alcohol that was ever so gently mixed in. Very nice warming feeling upon putting down a few sips. Mouthfeel was superb.

I waited in a relatively large crowd of people at Easton's beer fest last year to get a sample of this beer. This was probably one of the better brews I had that day. This Dubbel has a earthy brown color with a tan colored head. The aroma is a little spicy, a bit surprising. I expected this to be more earthy with some muted flavors of some figs and dark berries or something. The spices give this brew some life which isn't bad. The taste is also a little spicy nothing over the top but it's not bad. The other flavors that come through are the bread like yeast and some figs and a little banana. Mouthfeel was pretty good not overly carbonated or heavy.

I poured this into a pint glass, has a maroon body to it, with little head which settles down to a thin lace around the edge. The smell is very fruity mostly bananas and cherries. The taste is sweet of banana and little cherries, some malts come threw to. The mouth feel is ok. I wasn't impressed with this one. .

Nice head and amber color. No yeasties or sediment, fairly clear. Smells like funky, Belgian fruit. Tastes Like alcohol, bananas, and plums. Very easy going and high in esters. Mouthfeel is kind of sweet and easy going.... overall it reminds me of something like a homebrew!

Picked up a bottle in a mixed case a few months back. Served in a Chimay goblet.

A- Almost opaque, maroon and violet brew pours into the glass. Has some molasses and brown sugar colors as well, with a brighter light brown and yellow at the bottom of the glas. About one finger of bubbly off white/light tan colored head pours. Head settles down to a light foam cap.

S- Good amount of banana and dark fruits esthers blended together. Fruits include plums, grapes, and raisins. Has a somewhat vinous wine aroma to it. I can also detect the underlying malts that presents a dough like aroma like batter before baking.

T- Flavor is much like the aroma. Bananas apparent in the beginning, which then gives way to a hearty boiled malt bill. Malts are faintly carmelized. The ending flavors is the blend of dark fruits mentioned above, mostly plums and grapes.

M- Mouthfeel is a little bit on the lighter side actually. Lighter side of medium. The carbonation is felt more in the mouth than in its appearance.

D- Fairly drinkable, easier drinking than some dubbels. Most dubbels I've had don't have this much fruit in it, it tastes more like a BSDA than a dubbel, but they do have the belgian feel down. A good drink none the less though, and the non noticeable booze makes this easy to drink.

12oz bottle poured into a Portsmouth tulip.

A - A finger off tan foam that dies slowly over a minute or two to a skim coat and a thin collar caps a dirty amber color with reddish tint to it.

S - Very fruity on the nose, tons of esters, cherries, grapes...a bit wine-like actually. Candy sugar sweetness with some light astringency. Interesting.

T - Tons of Belgian yeast character. Sweet, candy sugar, grass, cinnamon, cloves, bubble gum. Very fruity...I'm getting a good amount of cherries in here. Slight tartness that plays off of the variety of fruits in here. A lot going on here...most of it good, but has a bit of an unusual overall effect.

M - Tingly with a firm medium/high carbonation, but with a lighter body - maybe a bit too light for style. Very fruity overall with lots of Belgian yeast character. Tart but not at all puckering and noticeable alcohol, but can't really call this warm either. Very grassy in the aftertaste...not really what I'd expect.

D - This is a tough one...not really a traditional dubbel. An interesting combination of flavors which are mostly enjoyable, but somehow still seem to miss the mark overall just a bit. I'm not having much difficulty putting this one down, but I don't feel compelled to find another bottle of this. An interesting experiment that is a bit hit & miss at the same time.

Poured into a stemmed tulip: Finger of foamy, smooth, beige head over a russet body with some nice, maroon highlights. Visibly nucleation, lots of tiny bubbles. Leaves some nice bars of lacing.

Smells somewhere between cola & raisins, even a little kind of melon-like sugar in there, some grape. Subtle chocolate notes pop up. Honestly, this has a character very close to extract homebrew, a little bit tangy or plastic. Some good stuff, but not so sure about that plastic quality.

Oy, it's there in the taste, too, along with an alcohol character that's too damn strong. Still, some nice plum & raisin flavors show up, but are kind of muted by that rough booze & extract tang. Too bad, because what's good in there I really like. Long, dry alcohol aftertaste, not a fan. Yeah, this is a tough one for me.

On the thin side, & that alcohol leaves a not-so-good feel as well, just hangs there & really isn't too enjoyable.

Man, I really wasn't feeling this one - weird artificial flavor, too much booze presence, not enough positives. I think I'll pass on this one.

A - Pours a copper-mahogany hue, fairly translucent, and it is capped with a decent collar of tan froth.

S - The nose is right-on; I get notes of cola, hazelnut, curacao, fig-date and general notes of medium dried stone fruits.

T - The taste is quite reserved, offering hints of jammy dark fruitiness, especially mejool date, and keeping the alcohol at an innocuously warming level. As it opens up, some brighter citrus notes begin to stand in contrast to the deeper dark fruit and subtle roast which comprises the flavor's mainstay.

M - Nice. Not authentic Belgian, but not horribly far off either.

D - Weyerbacher is getting better and better at Belgian styles. Every batch of Quad, Merry Monk's, and Verboten seems an improvement upon the last; it would be nice to see this join the permanent rotation.

Appearance -- Pours a hazed cherry hue with amber highlights and two fingers of fluffy beige head that leaves a veil of spotty lace once it recedes.

Smell -- Banana, yeast, spicy esters, red grape and dark fruit sweetness. Very inviting.

Taste -- plantain and clove, lightly tart yeast, dark fruit, and a slight mineral component that one usually only finds in proper Belgians. There is a slight metallic tinge that never fully disappears, though it's not terribly distracting. Also, the alcohol is slight brash on the onset

Mouthfeel -- Medium-light in body with medium-high fluffy carbonation. Probably the most American character of this beer. Solid, but not exceptional.

Drinkability -- While I'm not a hue fan of dubbels, I did enjoy this one very much. The alcohol is a bit harsh - pretty typical for Weyerbacher, really -- and the mouthfeel is sub-par compared to its continental counterparts, but otherwise this is a solid offering. MUCH better than the small batch beer that follows, November.

A - Pours a darker shade of copper with some clarity to it...the head was one finger tall, foamy, and off white in color...some decent lacing

S - Aromas present dark fruits (raisins, dates, cherries?) and caramel...there is also a slight spiciness to it

T - The first sip provides a slight sweetness which I'm guessing is from the caramel and dark fruits...there is a yeast presence in the middle of the beer and it also has that spiciness I picked up in the nose...the finish comes in with a sweet, buttered bread flavor

M - Medium bodied...there is a nice sweetness that doesn't become cloying...it's dry at points too but that's not a bad thing

D - Although this isn't my favorite style I like this series by Weyerbacher...it's letting me try differnt things while they experiment...a nice sweetness with Belgian flavors on the palate

A- Hazy light brown topped with a tan head. Head lasts forever and leaves some nice lacing on the glass.

S- Clove, banana, pear, apple, spices, and alcohol esters. Dubbles are one of my favorite beers to smell and this one only improves as it warms.

T- Nice banana and clove right away, then a little biscuit malt appears in the middle. The finish is dry, spicy and alcoholic, not over the top but it is a little hot, but then again it is a dubble.

M- More than medium in body but not heavy, the carbonation is well done, a little high for the style but not a distraction. There is a slight viscous feel to this one, not something I've encountered in other dubbles. It's not unpleasant but it does make it a little more full b bodies and chewy.

D- Very drinkable and accessible, nothing too extreme, the 7.6% ABV shows up a lot, but I would expect that.

Very solid American take on a dubble with just enough tweaks to make it interesting. I wish this was going to be a regular in the Weyerbacher line up, but it isn't, so if you see it grab it quick.

On tap at Galaxy Hut, Arlington, VA.

A: Dark brown pour, ruby highlights, nice tan head, good lace.

S: Dark fruit, raisins, Belgiany yeast. Very fruity nose.

Taste: Dark fruit, raisins, alcohol, yeast, estery, slight metallic aftertaste.

M: Good mouthfeel, not too thin, nicely attenuated.

D: A really good dubbel. I was pleased with this one and would definitely have it again.

A - Slightly hazy brown copper colored with reddish edges and a big, fluffy, short lived whitish head. Little lacing.

S - Sweet pilsner malts, with a slight malty caramel aroma. Big yeasty esters of dark fruits and a subtle phenolic spice.

F/M - Sweet caramelly pislner malts with a lot of yeasty fruitiness. Plums, prunes, raisins. Moderately low bitterness allows the malt sweetness to be up front. Light spicy phenols in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Dry finish with a lingering stone-fruity estery character.

D - Pretty good. Nice balance between malty sweetness and yeasty character. But the flavors all seem a little muddled. Not bad for a one-off small batch series.

Thanks to msulinski & stormking47 for bottles of Mike. I collect Weyerbacher brews. I like them. Give me all of them. I do plan on giving one of these bottles to a good friend named Mike. He may never drink it, but it's the thought that counts, right?

Poured into competing pint glasses, this brew is heart-deep red. The smell is suddent & clearly identifiable: Welch's Apple & Pear juice. If that's what the brewer was going for, target hit dead on.

Mike tastes more like a traditional dubbel than the nose would indicate. Happy, peppery spices, clove, bananas, pears, a little vanilla & big yeast thrown in for good measure.

Easy to drink, easy to view, easy to describe. Simple, straightforward, & good. Except that smell.
