Clear and golden with a slight haze, a little carbonation, and three fingers of off-white head. The smell is of citrus and tropical fruits, and Pine. The taste follows the nose. Light medium crisp body with moderate carbonation. Excellent brew that I got in Stratford Ontario. I’m checking in on November 28, 2022.

There is something distinct about this beer that I can't describe right now (I'll have to drink this as my first beer and describe its nuances). I've had this outstanding beer on two occasions and both times it was after imbibing at least six other IPA's. If you've been in that situation, you know you are drinking good beer, but the taste buds become a little anesthetized. Enter Black Swan IPA; the aroma and taste stood well above a very competitive crowd. These guys know how to make a distinct beer. If you get the chance; get your hands on this tasty concoction and you will truly enjoy a crown jewel of craft brewing.

32 oz. screwtop bottle from the brewery; bottled Jun 20 2015 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear golden-amber colour, producing one finger of frothy white foam at the surface. This modest-sized head begins to seep away over the next couple of minutes, leaving behind a soapy collar, and little in the way of lace. Zesty orange and grapefruit pith come through immediately on the nose, with additional nuances of peach, wet pine forest and tropical fruit. A touch of caramelized sugar and bready malt sweetness are the most subtle aspects of the aroma.
Pretty yummy stuff, but nothing mind-blowing to report about this one. The grainy malts and caramel sweetness come off a bit less subdued here than on the aroma; opening the profile up before leading into flavours of peach, apricot and mango. Flavours of mandarin orange and juicy grapefruit come forward nearer the finish, with some piney, resiny bitterness winding things down. Mildly earthy in the aftertaste, clinging to the palate and fading slowly. Medium-bodied, with mild carbonation levels that weakly prickle the palate, and a smooth, easy-drinking mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.7, a B grade. Black Swan's India Pale Ale is a good beer, but not a great one - it just doesn't really do anything to stand out from the crowd. The vibes of tropical fruit, citrus and peach are approachable enough... enjoyable, even. Honestly, I feel like I'm being harsh on this one for no reason, but the fact is it isn't impressing me as their other beers have managed to, and there are plenty of IPAs already available in the LCBO that I'd pick before this one. This is a serviceable hopped ale that I'd say is worth a look, but not something I'll return to regularly.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy golden/orange color to it. It has a thin white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves light lacing.
Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of citrus, grapefruit, mango, peaches, a light earthiness and faint bready malts.
Taste: Like the aromas, it has some citrus upfront, grapefruit, mango, peaches, some earthy/piney undertones and some sweet bready/buiscuity malts in the back.
Mouthfeel: It has a low-medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.
Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas. Lovely IPA, very refreshing and loaded with tropical notes.
Serving type: growler
