On tap @ Arabella Park - taps a dark brown light-defying color with a delicate 2 finger mocha colored cap which lasts the drink out - deep coffee aroma with lemon grass undertones ... moderate body but silky mouth feel...flavor is mush like a coffee flavored stout but there are no adjuncts in this, rich roastyness with lemony hopping that comes forward in the finish -- a decent robust porter suited to extended sipping

32 oz. screwtop bottle picked up at the brewery; filled May 16 2015 and "best consumed within 30 days". You don't have to tell me twice! In all seriousness, this is one of several litre-sized bottles I picked up from Black Swan earlier today, all of which I plan to try over the weekend. Served slightly chilled.
Pours jet black, capped off with one finger of dense, creamy, light tan-coloured head. Retention is ok; the foam dissipates over the next couple of minutes, leaving behind a skeletally-thin collar and some wisps on the surface, as well as a lovely curtain of delicate lace. The nose is about what you'd expect from this sort of beer, with roasted malts taking the driver's seat and pretty much going from there. Simple, approachable stuff; I get notes of baker's chocolate and coffee, with hints of toffee, toasted bread, oatmeal and maybe a bit of vanilla.
This is a just plain yummy porter, with the contrasting sweet and dry elements balanced out perfectly. Some mild caramel pudding and honey sweetness at first, along with lots of dark roasted malt flavours - mocha coffee and plenty of cocoa - starting off more like milk chocolate, but transmuting into a more dark/bittersweet cocoa vibe in the latter half of the sip. That's where things get really roasty and toasty, with some earthy, herbal hop bitterness wrapping things up quickly. Nice, palate-drying aftertaste; now that's what I want from a sessionable porter/stout. Light-bodied, and maybe a touch too thin/watery, but I'm really reaching for stuff to criticize here (I just saw 'oats' in the ingredients list and expected something fuller). This beer is just too damn easy to like - and easy to drink, for that matter - I could easily get through two of these Farva-sized bottles over the course of a night.
Final Grade: 3.95, a B+. Black Swan's Porter is a simple beer with a simple name - and it is so delicious, and put together so extremely well that it has left me quite excited to try their other offerings. For what it may arguably lack in complexity, it more than makes up for that deficit in drinkability - this stuff is just a pleasure to gulp, like a semi-local Taddy Porter equivalent - very more-ish. If I lived in or around Stratford, this would definitely become a go-to porter for me.
