Bowigens Beer Co. "407 Pils with Salt & Lime"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$4.99 @ Sandy's Shack Express, Ocala, FL
Notes via stream of consciousness: This is Bowigens standard 407 Pils with salt & lime added. It's a little lower in alcohol which I'm guessing is due to adding lime juice but I'm not sure. The body is lightly hazy, and it's golden beneath a short head of bright white foam. The lime is quite strong in the aroma and overrides the salt and sweetish malt and hops beneath. The flavor reveals a pleasant, nicely balanced German-style Pilsner with lots of lime and salt transforming it into some kind of "Mexican lager". Don't get me wrong, I love it, but if it were me I'd have left the German-style Pilsner alone and just done a new beer with a new name. It's really refreshing though, and almost compellingly drinkable, and I can understand why a brewery in Florida would want something like this in their lineup. I don't see anything on the label about artificial or "natural" flavorings so it must be real lime juice. 22 IBUs balances it nicely along with the lime juice. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the lighter end and crisp. The head could have held up better but that's most likely due to the added lime juice and acidity, and with limited head retention comes limited lacing; that's fine because it's to be expected for a beer of this style but it still hurts the score for appearance. All in all it's nicely done and quite enjoyable.
