A classic, American style pale ale. Our Pride & Joy is pale, crisp, very hoppy and aromatic. Robust hop flavours are layered over a balanced malty backbone. Initially soft to the palate, Pride & Joy builds to a generous but clean bitterness. Flavours and aromas of mango, citrus, earthy pine, tropical fruit and blueberry.

Copenhagen 4/12 2020. 44 cl can from Meny, Borups Allé. Frb. F. Black can with blue letters and white drawings of a gun and an eagle.

Pours slightly unclear, golden yellow with a mid-sized white head. Settles as thin, almost transparent layer of foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. Substantial lacing.

Aroma is medium intense with a sweet fruity odor mingling with a dry, citric scent. Peach and canned pear. Citrus, lime and dusty hops.

Light carbonation. Thin, oily, almost flat texture.

Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly stronger citric bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter and lingers for a while Finish is fairly dry.

A bit flat but with fine redeeming, dry bitterness.

Pours a clouded amber-golden color with a big, bubbly head atop.

Offers intriguing aromas of candied oranges, fresh cut limes and underlying blueberries with a note of ripe papaya as well.

Its body is light and refreshing with a thirst quenching effervescence, together with a well working balance.

Tastes of bitter, dry limes, smooth bread dough and sweet, ripe oranges with a note of lighter passion fruit. Offers a sweeter mid palate with more toffee accompanied bread dough, lighter caramel and sweeter turning fruits. Finishes with a pleasantly dry crispness, crackers, honey and prevailing, well nuanced bitter hops.

This is an outstandingly well brewed Pale Ale with a fantastic balance to it, which is recognizable in all departments, making this very enjoyable.

330 ml can, unfiltered and unpasteurised, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.3%. Pale golden colour, large white head. Pleasant hoppy aroma of tropical fruits, especially mango. Slightly dry and distinctly fruity flavour (tropical fruits again), with a piney / resinous and medium bitter finish. Well balanced.

Vocation's write-up doesn't mention grapefruit. It should. It has too much grapefruit rind. That taste is often the short-cut that partly mimics the West Coast PA. That is OK, but the short-cut shows.

So instead of finding nice things to say about Pride & Joy, I went on Vocation's website. I didn't get much satisfaction there either. Not an informative website. Like I couldn't find when were they born and what their struggles are and what they do for the community. I really don't get all that good guy stuff. So, I give them average marks there, too.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden honey in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate burnt orange + apricot + pale golden yellow colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall sudsy foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of very slightly mottled medium thick film covering a little more than 75% of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of pine, citrus/grapefruit pith, citrus/grapefruit zest, spicy, and herbal hops over the top of light to moderate aromas of toasted + bready + caramel malts with a light presence of caramel sweetness.

T: Upfront there are just shy of moderate flavors of toasted + bready + caramel malts with a light presence of caramel sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of pine, citrus/grapefruit pith, citrus/grapefruit zest, spicy, and herbal hops which impart a moderate amount of aggressive bitterness which lingers through the finish.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp upfront with a light amount of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a nice aggressive hop presence. Enjoyable with more than enough bitterness to hide any malty sweetness. Kind of old school but appreciated.

330ml Can from Co-Op (£1.99):
Opening quite sweet with a floral bitterness & plenty of tropical fruits that were dominated by mango & pineapple but had a few more following on behind too. There was a good balance to the beer with some lighter malts coming through around the middle with a grapefruit & citrus bitterness nearer the end to give the beer quite refreshing feel to it despite the dry finish.

L- Cloudy, I can't see through the glass. Mid yellow, pours with thin white head that rapidly clears to lacing.
S- Prominent citrus smell that was clear from 2 foot away on opening the can. Up close I get strong grapefruit, and I don't think anything else manages to get past that.
T- O-M-G. It is as if someone has handed me a glass of 1/2 lager + 1/2 grapefruit juice. It is that sharp and pungent.
M- Palate stripping.
O- I've never had a beer with *this* extreme of citrus flavour, it's completely OTT and unbalanced to me. There's not much point me trying to taste/rate any other beers this evening. What an unexpected taste it has, I'm curious what kind of person might positively enjoy such a beer.
BB is unclear, likely 06/19. Bought from a Tesco in London

From a can.
L: Nice haze, colour of ochre, light carbonation, massive and long-lasting head, lots of spotty lacing. Looks great in an IPA glass.
S&T: Mango and grapefruit followed by a solid, bitter, piney finish. Nice balance.
F: Smooth & dry. Lightly coats the mouth. A little soapiness.
O: Not bad at all. More hoppy and bitter than a lot of American-style pale ales brewed in the UK. I liked it.
