Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
In the spirit of traditional Belgian brewing we've departed from style-constraints to bring you a fresh take on the popular European style, the Belgian Amber. This big, complex, amber-hued ale was brewed with a substantial amount of Belgian and European malts that complement the spiciness imparted by Belgian abbey yeast. The result is a perfect balance between rich, toasty maltiness, Belgian Candi sugar and the light, floral profile of European hops. Enjoy this hearty Belgian-inspired brew now or age at a cool temperature to increase its complexities.

Poured from 750ml bottle into Chimay goblet.

L - Deep amber, sienna pour with thin head.

S - Bready malts, juicy citrus.

T - Orange scented caramels, creamy malt, candy sugar.

F - Creamy with thinning alcohol at the back. Alcohols are well hidden.

Flavorful and complex, incredibly creamy, if you can find it...get it.

Deep copper to amber in color. There's a trace of lightly tan head around part of the rim and it also forms an island in the middle. I smell lots of light malt and earthy grains. The taste is packed with light earthy grains and plenty of light Belgian candy sugar. The mouth is gently warmed by the high amount of alcohol and is also lightly chewy and sticky.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of off white head which slowly settles into a thin patch. Leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, toasty, and fairly sweet Belgian style aroma with a scent of spice, caramel, and fruit. Belgian yeast with some hints of clove, pepper, and funk. Malt scent of toast, caramel, grains, biscuit, and cracker. Fruit hints of banana, pear, apple, orange, raisin, fig, and prune. Also some hints of candied sugar and earthy hops. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a yeasty, toasty, and fruity Belgian style taste with notes of spice, fruit, and caramel. Belgian yeast with notes of pepper, clove, and funk. Malt notes of caramel, toffee, toast, biscuit, grains, and cracker. Dried fruit notes of banana, pear, apple, orange, fig, raisin, and prune. Sweet notes of Belgian candied sugar. Light presence of earthy hops. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy, spicy, and pretty drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is minimal.

Overall: A pretty good take on a Belgian style Amber. Nice mix of spice and fruit notes with toasty malt.

Very impressed. Complex and yummy. Yeast floating throughout, taste explodes upon the palette. ABV is hidden so well it's a bit scary. I try a new beer likely once a week. This is my favorite choice so far in 2016. Happy Aniversary AleSmith!

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is relatively clear amber to rosé in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a large patch of white bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of candi sugar are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of candi sugar along with notes of dark fruit and hints of Belgian yeast. The alcohol is rather well masked from the taste.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The sugary nature lends a little stickiness.
O: The heavier body and spicy nature of the mouthfeel makes this a beer that you want to sip slowly.

Appearance: pours a deep and burnt orange to dull amber color. a finger of a white head forms and has strong retention. leaves behind a slight lacing. good clarity and strong brightness.

Smell: strong belgian phenols, quite spicy and with a bit of clove. some fruitiness with mostly raisins and figs but some light banana. toasted grains and caramel malts are there but a bit tough to pick out over the other strong smells.

Taste: opens with some yeast just as the nose. light vanilla, good dose of spice and some clove. maltiness comes in fairly strong with notes of toasted grains and some lighter caramels. fruits come in throughout with raisins and figs along with lighter banana. light floral to noble hops

Moutheel: medium bodied. good balance, not overly sweet even with the low amount of hops. dry but not overly dry finish. warming alcohol presence with little in the taste.

Overall: I'm not a fan of AleSmith's Grand Cru but this does a step towards redeeming their belgian beers. Certainly glad I tried it as it is flavorful, and well balanced. nice and one of the more unique american belgian styled beers.

Regrettably brief notes:

HEAD: ~1.5 inches wide. Off-white colour. ~4 minute retention.

BODY: Copper-amber colour. Fine yeast is visible within.

AROMA: Raw. Poorly attenuated Belgian yeast. Heavy banana ale esters. Clove.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: Clove, banana esters, poorly attenuated Belgian yeast, amber malts.

Subpar in both build and balance.

TEXTURE: Overcarbonated, medium-bodied, unrefreshing, smooth, wet.

Not boozy, astringent, harsh, oily, gushed, or hot.

OVERALL: Alesmith - excellent brewery that it is - once again offers evidence they aren't great at non-American styles. This is drinkable but overpriced, and I wouldn't want a second bottle.
