With a color close to opaque chestnut, there is a great aroma of whiskey cordial with robust caramel and molasses accentuating its personality. This transitions well when you taste the beer, with its deep, sweet caramels, molasses brown sugar and dark bourbon with some notes of tobacco and vanilla. It has just the right amount of booze so you can taste the beer itself, which is the right balance for this style. The mouthfeel is fantastic, along with the smooth carbonation, right down to the great, consistent aftertaste. Despite advertising the same alcohol content, this beer has a lighter flavor than the regular Old Ale. Overall, it’s as though you are having a whiskey cordial with a good amount of molasses sweetness. This is just like the Barrel Aged Numbskull in that it’s worth every penny to getting in line with the ticket to order this great sipper. Another good option is the Rye-on-Rye from Boulevard Brewing Company and the Vanilla Bean Stout from Avery Brewing Company.

Pours a rusty, hazy brown with a 1 finger light tan head. Not much lacing or retention from the head.

Rich brown sugar and molasses aroma. Caramel, dates, and raisins. Oak, bourbon, and toasted malt.

Bourbon comes through stronger than on the nose. Molasses, caramel, brown sugar, and sweet toasted malt. Dark fruits. Dates, raisins, and figs. Oak barrel and vanilla.

Medium+ feel on the tongue with a slight syrupy aspect. Moderate carbonation. Sweet with a mild boozy heat.

Sweet and malty all day. Nice barrel without being overpowering.
