Collaboration with Modern Times.
Together with our buddies at Modern Times, one of our absolute favorite San Diego breweries, we’ve jammed this delicious hazy IPA full of massive amounts of Citra, Enigma, and Vic Secret hops with a finishing touch of grapefruit and lemon peel. The resulting aromas of bright pineapple, berries, and citrus will hit you like a wave of cosmic deliciousness.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass
A: Pours hazy golden yellow amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a light layer and leaves some spotty lacing.
S: Fruity, first berries and citrus, raspberry and tangerine, followed quickly by tropical and stone fruit, a little coconut, grassy, a touch of pine, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.
T: Really unique fruity combo, big raspberry leads off, backed with tropical and stone fruit, plus some citrus, passion fruit, pineapple, guava, orange, peach, apricot, pear, grapefruit and a sorta white wine grape, distinct coconut, spicy pine, a bit grassy, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.
M: Medium body, moderately lively carbonation, fairly soft on the palate.
O: Was a little worried when I saw how this was being rated. Having tried it, I'd guess it's because it's got a very unique flavor profile that most people probably weren't expecting. It's not often that raspberry is the lead on an IPA, and is backed with coconut. Overall, I'd say it's a fun unique one to try.

DATE: July 17, 2020... OCCASION: more Community after a great week... GLASSWARE: Man Skirt willibecker... pours a fizzy, sizzling white head that settles to a finger-thick creaminess... its body is a blood orange murkiness that still reveals a roiling life of small bubbles... big pineapple courtesy of the Vic Secret, sharp berries courtesy of the Enigma, and the juicy citrus of Citra--quite a potent cocktail... first sip is juicy, light to medium-bodied, refreshingly tart and swift at the finish... creamy too, especially in the middle... the profile presents as bright citrus, walloping pineapple, honey, sunflower, raspberry, blueberry and soft pine... this works with the humid night, refreshing and pleasant...how could these two breweries work together and NOT create something enjoyable?! Not happening!

I purchased this at TJs in Carmel Valley, very excited to try a collaboration between two favorite San Diego breweries. But as often happens, collaboration beers often are weird, not so pleasant experiment, not always, but often enough. I excitedly popped the can and the beer poured into the tulip glass....way browner than I would have expected! So, the color seems way off compared to the other reviews. The beer wasn't refrigerated at TJs, but I buy lots of IPAs at TJs at room temp and it's usually not a problem. The aroma is a bit weird, very citrusy and lots of grapefruit, and the flavor is way too much grapefruit/citrus. A pretty strange beer. It got worse as I finished the can. I never do this but the other three cans are going down the drain, life is too short.

Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: New England IPA
Glass: Clear shaker pint glass
Price: $11.99 for 4-pack
From: Trader Joe’s in Santa Barbara (Milpas), Calif.
Purchased: June 12, 2020
Consumed: June 13, 2020
Misc.: Collab between AleSmith and Modern Times; No canned on date
Picked this up at a Trader Joe’s in Santa Barbara. The can description read, “Together with our buddies at Modern times, one of our absolute favorite San Diego breweries, we’ve jammed this delicious hazy India Pale Ale full of massive amounts of Citra, Enigma and Vic Secret hops with a finishing touch of both grapefruit and lemon peel zest. The resulting aromas of bright pineapple, berries and citrus will hit you like a wave of cosmic deliciousness.” Generally not a fan of AleSmith’s hoppy stuff, but needed to try this collab. Not a fan of Vic Secret and not that familiar with Enigma.
Poured a semi-hazy medium yellow-to-gold color with two fingers of off-white frothy head. Could not really see any bubbles beneath the head. Outstanding spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)
Smelled Citra, dank pine, Vic Secret, white wine, viney berry, melon, pineapple, grapefruit, lemon peel, herbal and grass. Mainly pineapple, tangerine and grapefruit from the can, which came off a little better on the nose. (Smell - 3.50)
Tasted a little better than the nose. In order got Citra, Vic Secret, white wine, viney berry, grapefruit, melon, pineapple, pine needle, tangerine, lemon peel, grass, herbal and orange blossom late. (Taste - 3.50)
Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Juicy finish. (Feel - 3.75)
This was very good overall, but nothing I need to have again (after the other three I have in my fridge). (Overall - 3.75)
