This beer was brewed in collaboration with Anvil of Hope, a charity founded by Peter and Vicky Zien. A percentage of the proceeds from this beer will be donated to charities who support first responders. AleSmith for Hope is a hazy IPA bursting with intense notes of tropical fruit from huge additions of Idaho 7 and Aloha hops.

Type: 16-oz. can
Reviewed as: New England IPA
Glass: Firestone 16-oz. Spiegelau IPA glass
Price: $3.99
From: Windmill Farms in Del Cerro (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Aug. 12, 2020
Consumed: Aug. 20, 2020
Misc.: No canned on date

Picked up a can of this with a bunch of other stuff on a recent trip to Windmill Farms. Unfortunately I rarely find a hoppy beer from AleSmith I like, especially their hazy stuff. Still wanted to give it a shot. Their website calls this, “This beer was brewed in collaboration with Anvil of Hope, a charity founded by Peter and Vicky Zien. A percentage of the proceeds from this beer will be donated to charities who support first responders. AleSmith for Hope is a hazy IPA bursting with intense notes of tropical fruit from huge additions of Idaho 7 and Aloha hops.”

Poured a medium yellow hazy color with three fingers of frothy white head. Could see some bubble streams coming up the sides of the glass. Excellent foamy lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Not a lot from the smell. Working real hard, got white bread, melon, cantaloupe, spoiled fruit, pineapple, pine and grapefruit rind. Much of the same from the can with the addition of some earthy malt. Not good overall. (Smell - 2.75)

Tasted better than the nose, but still wasn’t that good. Had the same notes as the can. Got white bread, cracker, biscuit, melon, cantaloupe, spoiled fruit, pineapple, pine, grapefruit rind, dish soap, herbal and hints of tea. (Taste - 3.25)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Dry, abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.25)

Just an average New England Style beer, which is even low for me for AleSmith hoppy beers. I will keep trying, but I just can’t understand why their IPAs (especially their hazy IPAs) are so below par. Probably overrated this too. Bummer. (Overall - 3.00)

Pours a very cloudy, opaque golden color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention is very good as is lacing. Citrus earthiness on the aroma. Kind of a dank, grassy, citrus taste. Looks like a hazy but smells and tastes like a West Coast. Mild soapiness at the end. Not bad, but not great.

A 16oz can with a canned on date of 8.4.2020

L - Cloudy blond yellow with sediment floating, and 1/2 finger of head that dissipates.

S - Citrus dominates

T - Citrus and lightly bitter. Well balanced, tasty as (%$#%)(.

F - Medium body and carbonation

O - Has the classic Alesmith IPA taste, well balanced, delicious. Well done!
