A collaboration between AleSmith and Stone Brewing, Dual Exposure is an easy-drinking double IPA infused with notes of hibiscus, orange and lime peel, all packed into a light-bodied brew brimming with tropical citrus and fruit from huge amounts of Citra, Strata, HBC 592 and Amarillo. When these two breweries join forces, there’s no escaping the “dual exposure” tasting experience that accompanies a brew of this caliber.

L - Bronze with 1/2 finger of sticky white head. Great looking IPA

S - Has that Alesmith IPA yeast strain smell.

T - Nice blend of the Stone and Alesmith IPA, with some lemon zest thrown in the mix. Very tasty. Malt forward and bitter but not overwhelming in this area

F - Medium body and carbonation

O - A good brew, and obvious features from both breweries are evident

Consumed July 5 2021 from an undated can bought off a room temp shelf. Pours a darki-ish amber with maybe the merest hint of pink overtone with a voluminous, loose head with large bubbles. The head is not particularly long lasting but leaves some intermittent lacing that is not too remarkable. In the recommended Becher glass I did not get a lot of smell out of this. IMO it would have benefitted from different glassware with more airspace above the head if the goal is to gather the smell. The flavor was not overtly hibiscus or fruity. Light body, as advertised. Overall I had envisioned something more overtly reminiscent of the label description and this one did not deliver that experience even though it was an OK beer.

It smells floral and like grapefruit with the slightest hint of malt in the background.

Bitterness hits first and then sweetness. It's a lot like it smells grapefruity and then breadiness.

It's thin with a ton of foamy carbonation making it smooth.  It finishes with bitterness followed by a floral sweetness.

Overall it's a really good IPA.  It's different than any other IPA I've had probably because it's from two different breweries. I'll give it a 5.1 out of 6

Oct. 26, 2021 Update: Owwww! how did I get another can of this and not remember it! Fool me once... It really is revolting.

A pretty brew, though startling pinky amber color when first pouring out of the can. It tastes stong from the start, but the weird fruity pucker is a puzzle. Aroma is lemony with some kind of berry jam. The flavor is just disturbing, with the sweetness and spoiled fruit.

This is too bitter, the usual Stone legacy, especially with the distracting herbal tea flavor lingering on along with the astringency. I think this is a combination the beer world didn't need. From the 16 oz can purchased in the far Northwest. dated 02/08/21 on the bottom.

16oz can canned 2/19/21
16oz pint glass
L: Pours like pink iced tea. Looks like tea. Not hazy, good transparency. Well carbonated until end, thin head stays around with med lacing.
S: Citra hops, stone fruit, light malt. Simple.
T: Bubbly, zippy, lime, tea, hibiscus flower, sour, lime again, pink grapefruit...and that hangs on...grassy, tea again. Long deep tawny finish.
This joint beer btwx Alesmith & Stone is good. It is fresh, lightly malty and 8.2%ABV but it somehow lacks flavor to me. Quite tart & puckering-tea-bag-stained, it drinks fairly easily for a DIPA. Interestingly, it might be rather good with a couple of ice cubes as it leans over to being a friend of an odd-ball rock shandy.

Poured from a can into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a hazed pinkish, ruby-red grapefruit like color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, fading over time to leave a large level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the brew is rather strong of a grapefruit and slightly crackery aroma. Along with these smells comes aromas of a floral (hibiscus?) nature as well as some citrus smells of orange and a light berry smell.

Taste – The taste begins with a big grapefruit juice flavor mixed with a moderate level of a bready taste and a touch of orange juice. Along with these flavors are some light herbal hop tastes as well as a bit of flower. As the taste advances the grapefruit gets even stronger and transitions from a sweeter grapefruit to a more bitter grapefruit taste. At the same time lots of pine begins to work its way onto the tongue, and with the grapefruit and an increase in the floral tastes, it leaves one with a nice grapefruity, somewhat dank, and floral taste to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is slightly more thick and chewy with a carbonation level that is rather high. For the floral, grapefruit, and dank hop tastes the feel is rather nice and makes for an easy slow sipper.

Overall – A rather enjoyable, grapefruit and floral heavy IPA. Overall, well worth a try if you have the opportunity.

Interesting.... Very, very interesting..... Light caramel coloring, nice lacing on the glass, a fun mix of hop varieties so this is a fun and drinkable, yet not very hoppy beverage... Pretty good

Bought at Hazel's in Boulder CO. ~$5 for 16 oz can. Canned 02/09/21, consumed 04/16/21

A&S: Very unique looking. The beer is lively, transparent, and rosewood in color. The head is white (slightly pink) pours a litter more than a finger, and retains very well, in addition to leaving speck of lacing. The aroma is very floral hop heavy, I am also getting grassy, citrus, and hibiscus tones.

T&M: The hibiscus dominates in taste. Personally, I would like this to be a bit more subtle, but it depends on what you like. I also get limes. Grassy hops finish it off. Mouthfeel is sharp and crisp.

Overall: Definitely a unique beer, but nothing I would be buying again.

tallboy dated 2/8/21; today is 3/21

pours a clear red-with-a-dash-of-gold (hibiscus oriented) body with a red-tinged off-white head that has moderate retention and leaves a moderate amount of thin lacing behind as it settles to a murky cap with a rocky halo

aroma is dank passion fruit, lime, and hibiscus with a tea-tinge and pine in the wings, along with a fairly high malt sweetness

taste is like licking a lime, then experiencing a dense and dank passion fruit and hibiscus tea bag. the malt shows up later to support the cause, but honestly it's mostly the fruit and tea-like profiles taking the lion's share.

mouthfeel is high carbonation and lighter-bodied, especially for an IPA; it's a smooth sailing affair with occasional carbo prickles and an earthy tea-bag with lime peel bitterness.

overall:
while this wasn't straight forward disco for me, especially given that it's a collab b/w two of my favorite brewers, this was certainly interesting and entertaining, with an easy drinkability that pays off a surprisingly complicated taste profile. honestly, as entertaining the combo is, it isn't mind-blowingly good, even with it's massive load of individuality - as in, I certainly couldn't sit with this one alone for an extended period without looking for a break. but as a single affair, or part of a flight, I'll look forward to it for sure.
