For this special edition of our signature imperial stout we partnered up with our friends at Mostra Coffee to provide their artisanal flair. Combined with copious amounts of coconut, this beer has intense notes of chocolate, roast, dark fruit, and a touch of milky sweetness, creating a perfect decadent blend of flavors. Cheers!

Copenhagen 10/11 2021. 47,3 cl can from Kihoskh, Sdr. Boulevard, Kbh. V. Metallic can with light green lines and the name of beer and brewery in black with the checkered racing flag pattern.

Pours opaque dark brown with a small beige head. Stable. Settles as thin, patch of foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing to speak of.

Aroma is fairly intense with a sweet roasted malty scent mingling with with earthy notes and coconut. Brown sugar, dark roasted malts, coffee. Coconut and hints of vanilla. Earthy notes of leather and compost.

Light carbonation. Medium thick, soft, smooth, oily, slightly viscous and fat texture, Lightly tingling.

Flavor is intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a strong coffee bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter. Lingering. Finish is dry.

Pretty light on the coconut - but a damn nice Stout.

16 ounce can, no dating that I noticed on it. Thanks to Brutaltruth for this one! Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stuck around for a while. There's a good amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like coffee, burnt/charred malt, dark fruit, dark chocolate, coconut and some earthiness. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some anise, cream and dark bready flavors. I think it's more coffee than coconut tasting, although the coconut comes out more as the beer warms. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's a bit slick and creamy with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good overall brew, definitely worth trying if you get the chance!

Name: Speedway Stout - Mostra Coffee and Coconut
Brewery: Alesmith Brewing
Location: San Diego, CA
Style: Imperial Stout
A.B.V.: 12%

I had this beer hiding in the recesses of my cellar; I thought it was time to review it. I know I purchased this beer a few years back, but I am still determining the actual purchase date; maybe I should keep track. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 46 degrees. The pour created a creamy, foamy, two-fingered head with average retention. The somewhat slow dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is dark brown, nearly black, charting at SRM 34, and is opaque. The appearance of the beer is slightly above average.
Nosing the glass, I smell medium-roasted coffee, coconut, chocolate, molasses, anise, earthiness, and roasted malts. Smelling the glass again, I detect raisins, caramel, toffee, malty sweetness, char, light Maillard, a hint of soy sauce, and tobacco. The beer reminds me of a mounds bar but has coffee in the chocolate.
Sipping the beer, I taste a rich medium-roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate, light coconut, dirt, anise, molasses, char, Maillard, caramel, and toffee. After a few more sips, I detect figs, cherries, robust roasted malts, a hint of burnt grains, and earthy dirt.
The mouthfeel is chewy and finishes tannic. The body is medium-plus and has medium carbonation.
The coconut got lost in the robust coffee and malt flavors and aromas. I was hoping for more of a coconut present. I prefer the Barrel Aged Speedway to this one. Overall, it is still a tasty beer, and I enjoyed it.

From the 16 oz can in a snifter. This excellent imperial pours a pitch black with
a moderate head of brown foam that settles to a thick ring, thin dusty layer, and
sports some light lacing. Nose of toasted coconut, rich coffee, earthy malts, dark
chocolate, moderate char, and subtle brulee. Flavors hit the mark with rich dark
coffee, bittersweet chocolate, moderate char, deep roast, brulee, dark berry notes
of blackberry and blueberry, and toasted coconut/ Mouth feel is full, smooth, rich,
coating, warming, light carbonation, and a mellow bitter malt finish heavy laden with
coffee and coconut that is nicely balanced.

Overall----hard to beat the variants, and this one I think nails it!

Cheers

I love Speedway, having said that, this did not live up to the tradition.
Poured like Speedway but with a reduced head retention.
Nose hinted at some earthy, slightly bitter coffee roast and some tapered back malt notes: cocoa, caramel, etc.
But the flavor didn't even really live up to the declared ingredients. The coffee was lackadaisical at best, couldn't find the coconut, and even the malt notes were rather staid. Not bad, but like a base brew specifically created to play with, and nobody came with toys.
Mouthfeel had a nice heft and a slow dry roast that closed out slightly bitter.
Maybe it was due to having a few years on it, but meh.
Of course, if I had a shot at a fresher one, I'd hit it in a minute due to my faith in Alesmith overall.

Poured from a can into a snifter - dark black pour with lacing appearing to the surface.
Getting aromas of coffee, chocolate, slight coconut, dark malts, dark fruits, molasses.
Taste resembles the nose with big emphasis on the coffee and chocolate. The coconut is in the middle but slightly along with the malts, some dark fruits and molasses.
Feel is medium heavy bodied. Sipper.
Overall I find this one better than the Hawaiian stout as It has more coconut flavor but I think the coffee takes over the most part hiding the coconut put into this.

Speedway Stout Monstra Coffee and Coconut from Alesmith. 16 fl oz can from @2beerdogs in NBW BIF 17. Reviewed 03/05/23 (Review 3090). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “CANNED ON 03/16/2021”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Suggested on can, serve at 50 - 55 degrees. Served at 50.9 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 58.1 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.25
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same but enough penetration occurs to make small amounts of precipitate visible. When rear lite, still opaque but ruby at the edges.
Head: Average (Maximum 3.3 cm, aggressive center pour), desert sand, high density, average retention, reducing to an undulating 0.5 – 0.8 cm crown fed by carbonation and a rocky complete cap.
Lacing – Fair. Thin, lacy reticulum which continues dying until it exists only as ghostly lines.
Aroma – 4 – A little chocolate when the tap popped – after the pour, not much. No hops, no yeast. No ethanol (12 % ABV as marked on the label) aroma.
Flavor – 4.25 – Mild coffee with a hint of chocolate. Initially slightly bitter, but this quickly fades. No hops, no malt, unfortunately no obvious coconut – but I think it’s covertly balancing out the coffee bitterness. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Slight gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium; bordering on creamy; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25 Coffee is the main flavor but is not harsh or bitter – balanced by the slight chocolate flavor and the coconut sweetness and smoothness. Good Murican Impy stout which I wish were distributed here. The fact that it’s two years old doesn’t mean jack – it’ll still be tasty when the sun goes nova.

Pours a black coffee hue with a decent cola head reducing to a thin ring and leaving sheets of sudsy lacing. Nose is big dark, fresh ground coffee beans. Vanilla, chocolate, plum, prune and black cherry are undertones with a light coconut finish. Taste follows suit with a big toasty malt overtone and everything else basically becoming accents with a huge espresso finish.

Thick pour, mostly opaque black, fairly menacing; the nose follows that up with strong notes of espresso and unsweetned bakers chocolate - pretty much straight espresso with only minor notes of coconut. Tasty; a very strong coffee stout offering.

Pours pitch black color with a 2 finger thick foamy brown head that was packed with bubbles, fading slowly and leaving nice spotty lacing coating the glass. Smells of molasses, burnt coffee grinds, caramel, dark chocolate, smoked grains, brown sugar and toasted coconut. The chocolate notes dominate with coffee and nutty accents adding complexities and balance to the brew.

Flavor is a bittersweet combo of chocolate, roasted malts, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, molasses, caramel, burnt coffee grinds, charred wood, vanilla, coconut, soy sauce, smoked grains, piney hops and ash. This is smooth with no alcohol bite, a nice medium body and a milky feel as it slides down. I wish the coffee flavor was stronger, but this was still a damn good beer.
