Nice dark brown pour, big frothy head and some decent lacing. Snot locker gets some heavy roast, cracker and maybe toffee. Taste buds get that also, has a "stale coffee" finish that gives some finish.

12 oz. can poured into a large wine glass after some warming time. Pour is deep black with a thin mocha colored cap of foam. Settles to a light ring after a few minutes but does kick back up with some agitation. Nose of roasted malts and a hint of coffee along with some fruit notes. Faint bit of smokiness with warming. Taste follows with more roast and carob. Finish appears fairly dry for the ABV as the spice character mixes with sweet malts. Overall not overly complex but decent. Would have expected Alesmith to make a porter more in the English style.

Note: Canned on 9/7/23

From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa, Calif.
Purchased: Dec. 30, 2021
Consumed: Jan. 12, 2022
Misc.: Canned on Nov. 24, 2021

Grabbed five cans of stuff I hadn’t tried on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. Was kind of shocked I hadn’t had this one before but I guess it is new. Just figured that AleSmith had a porter from before. Anyway, their website called it “Just in time for the holiday season, AleSmith Porter is available in our Tasting Room and hitting shelves near you now. This rich, sultry brew showcases complex notes of biscuit, caramel, and chocolate with a velvety finish. Bundle up with this cozy brew this winter!”

Poured a pitch black color with three fingers of khaki-tan rocky-to-frothy head. Could see just a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Excellent spotty lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled caramel, toffee, biscuit, chocolate, cocoa, toasty nuts and dark fruit. Not as good as it went down and a step down from the can. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste followed the nose but not quite as good to me. In order got caramel, toffee, toasted brown bread, biscuit, bitter dark chocolate, black coffee, cocoa, toasty malts, dark fruit and hints of cinnamon. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Malty finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This was an outstanding porter overall but I was actually hoping for more. (Overall - 4.00)

Black-brown with a nice head that laces the glass. Lighter scent of coffee, dark chocolate, hops, touch of booze. It rides the line of being smooth and sweet, along with being crisp and fresh. It's not overly heavy like a lot of porters/stouts, but still delivers a ton of flavor - loved it

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a deep brown color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head fades rather fast leaving a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a chocolate and molasses smell mixed with other sweet aromas of caramel and vanilla. Along with these smells comes a nice roastiness and a little bit of coffee. Rounding it all out is a touch of cola and dark fruit of raisin and cherry, producing a nice and rich, and very inviting aroma overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a deep roasted and toasted malt flavor with some chocolate and coffee flavors as well as a decent showing of a brown sugar, caramel, and molasses taste. There is a little bit of a vanilla and some plum upfront, both of which get a bit stronger as the taste advances. At the same time the chocolate takes on more sweetness and creaminess, getting more milk chocolate like in flavor. Toward the end of the taste profile a little bit of an increase in some bitterness due to added coffee and some char comes to the tongue, producing an overall moderately sweet and roasty, slightly bitter taste in the end.
Mouthfeel – The feel of the brew is creamy and smooth with a slightly lower carbonation level. The feel is great for the style and the tastes, making for one easy sipper.
Overall – A very well crafted porter overall. A little on the sweeter side, but still very well balanced. A very pleasant drinker.

Nice foam head. Classic porter dark brown color. Malty smell. Taste of malt and burnt chocolate. Strangely pale aftertaste. It’s different but pretty Average. Not as good as their brown ale
