Beginning with an amber base, we began the journey for this beer more than 3 years go. Gothic Funk is a blend of: red wine barrels with Lactobacillus, red wine barrels with Brettanomyces, bourbon barrels with Lactobacillus, and bourbon barrels with Brettanomyces. The blend is a delicious combination of wild and sour characteristics all around an amber beer platform with slight toasty and caramel notes.

Uh, really weird.

Not like any Flemish sour ale i’ve had, more of an experimental wild ale without any style designation. The bourbon and wine blend is odd in itself, there’s a lot of vanilla from the bourbon barrel, popcorn kernel notes of THP, with mild twangy acidity from the wine barrels. Brett character is overpowering, cheesy and a lot of THP popcorn kernel for some reason. It’s unique, but all the disparate elements don’t really coalesce. Interesting to sample, but I pity the fool that tries to dome a bottle solo.
