Consumed January 2nd, 2012 at the brewery. Called "Benyhana Espresso Stout" on the beer menu.
Beer is essentially black; no light makes it through the glass. A creamy one-finger head of light tan subsides to a very sticky film that provides excellent sheeting.
It's no surprise that the aroma is nothing but pungent black coffee.
The flavor is likewise an all-coffee affair; bitter and strong both up front and on the finish. In between, there's a slight dark roasted malt note.
Mouthfeel is unremarkable but not flawed.
Drinkable (especially if you like coffee) but not in a way that makes you look forward to having it again.

Enjoyed on a sunny Saturday in January (01/24/09).
A: Dark brown with a golden brown head. Half creamy/half bubbly. Incredible lacing throughout.
S: Real nice espresso bean in the head. Most it lingers. Subtle overall, but well done.
T: Smoother than an oatmeal. Not bitter.
M: Wonderful. Not very thick at all.
D: Great winter drink. And by winter, I mean California-80-degrees-and-sunny winter. But, I'm sure it goes down well for those you in colder climates...

Another solid new brew from Anacapa!
A - Not the strongest card to be played by the Espresso Stout. It's got the look: dark brown body with a tan head. However, the head bubbly, not creamy/foamy! It looked more like Mr.Bubbles than a stout.
S - Little, but consistent espresso scent.
T - The flavor follows up the scent with a bit more insistence. I was expecting a chalky espresso bitterness, but instead found a smooth, subtle, complimentary espresso presence coupled nicely with the usual stout flavors.
M - Smooth and creamy. Very little bitterness makes this one slide all over the tongue with little hinderance, bordering quite closely to a wateriness without actually taking the plunge.
D - Utterly drinkable. Great winter brew. Even though the abv is a little high (you don't notice it) I'd consider this a solid session drink.
