Consumed January 2nd, 2012 at Anacapa Brewing.
This beer is a "black IPA" (as the waitress informed me). As such, it is of course black in the glass. A one finger head I suspect may be nitro-delivered sits atop the beer. It is very smooth and uniform and composed of tiny bubbles. This is a really good-looking beer.
Aroma is less intense than I expected: slightly piny with citrus accents and a little bit of soapiness (think Samuel Adams Boston Lager for that note).
Flavor is chocolaty up front, segueing to some resiny pine and finishing with moderate bitterness. Very balanced between malt and hops. Really more like a chocolate porter with stronger than normal hops than a black IPA.
Mouthfeel is thick (again wondering about nitro) and smooth.
Overall, this baby was easy to put down and I could have had another. Good stuff.
