Sampling a cold crowler poured into a snifter. The beer pours a clear amber color with ruby highlights and a creamy dense eggshell white head that fades slowly to a wispy island and a thin edge layer.
The aroma is lots of malt, I get caramel and toffee with a bit of maple syrup notes some whiskey and brown sugar. I also get a bit of vanilla and some floral hop character. Fairly sweet and appealing nose on this beer.
The first sip reveals an average body and slightly lighter texture than anticipated but still is a little sticky on my palate. The carbonation is very fine and gentle, physical traits of this beer makes for a very drinkable experience.
The flavor is similar to the nose with sweet malt of brown sugar, caramel and some whiskey notes. I dont get any hops on the flavor and the 10% ABV is well hidden with no warming on the swallow. I do get a little black pepper and attribute that to some of the booze. There is a lingering whiskey note that coats my palate after each swallow. This is a malty barleywine that I would put more in the realm of strong ale or old ale based on no hop profile.
I enjoy this bigger beer with high drinkability. Glad to have had a chance to sample. thanks Curt for the opportunity!
