Whoever Nellie is, they sure have a particularly strong grip on the rotation at Taft's Ale House. Confidently rolling into mid-winter with a lemony, frotsty beer that seems better suited for summer. But when your name is Nellie...
Pale, ...well, lemony in color, the hazy Nellie's Lemon Frosty Ale pours with an expansive froth and a mild scent of cereal, cake and lemon. With an early introduction of sweet cereal grains, a creamy shortcake maltiness has a near-vanilla effect on the taste.
As the creamy, wheaty beer washes the middle palate, the light taste of lemon links up seamlessly with the creamy sweetness for a hint of lemon meringue with vague complexity or intent to balance or add complexity. Only a slight herbal finish offers scant bitterness for a session that's simply weak in taste and texture.
Medium light in body, the frosty ale trends watery and off-dry on the finish with a short aftertaste of watered down lemonade mixed with cereal and grain. Off-refreshing and simply banal, it seems that Nellie dropped the ball on this beer.
