A good rendition of a very good winner for a very young brewer.
Looks are good, but standard. Smells tell me first that I will be dealing with lots of dark malt, then some complexed flavors involving coffee and chocolate probably vanilla... but the coconut, not much at all. Tastes confirm my nose is working, but about mid-palate a superb dryness starts to become too dry (like I need water.) All this sits in the mouth good enough (since I got the water.)

In the OA scheme of the market, I paid $14 for this at Wise Guys (they have 3 stores in northwest Indiana.) While I probably got my money's worth in terms of experience, I did not get a best buy. My guess is that New Oberpfalz probably needs to charge what it did and that the Wise Guys came out ahead. In fact, I feel like I cleaned out their shelves at a premium price since this stout seems like it was last released in 2016.

Since this is my first from New Oberpfalz (a challenge to spell correctly after drinking a bomber @ 9.6%), I went on their website and their youth of 4 years is not evident when you put together that their name pays homage to an isolated part of Bavaria, that they have a sophisticated (but limited) menu, that they self-distribute in northern Indiana within proximity to the iconic of iconics (3 Floyds) and that New Oberpfalz was started by husband and wife team who clearly love each other as much as their beer. For that, they get some big OA hugs.

Taste: semi sweet malt, toasted coconut, vanilla, some cocoa. Baker's chocolate, vanilla nose. Black, opaque, tan delicate head, nice lattice of lace. Medium body. rich desert stout that would finish a dinner. 53 IBUs

22oz bottle, no apparent freshness date. Rigorous pour reveals a thin tan head atop a near black body. Sweet aroma of piƱa colada with a hint of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. More stouty roast flavors come through with notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, sweetened coconut, caramel, fig and date. Full body, modest carbonation, cloyingly sweet at times. Overall, the pineapple & coconut aroma is odd, and it's very sweet making it less enjoyable. For some reason I imagine chocolate covered pineapple upside down cake with coconut - kind of odd.

Grabbed this on a whim when I was back on campus at Purdue. It pours black as can be and has a decent sized, medium brown colored head. Lacing is solid. Taking a whiff of this one reveals a smell that is mostly sweet, with chocolate and vanilla being the dominant flavors. Right at the back end of the scent there is just a touch of coconut to be found. The scent translates almost exactly to the taste of the beer, with mostly sweet and vanilla-y flavors dominating most of the drink. Towards the middle to end of the drink the coconut is in there as a subtle contributor. The light fruitiness, combined with the sweetness of the vanilla makes the overall impression of the drink taste of feel rather lighter than the style would suggest. For a 9% ABV beer, this one is very smooth without being heavy and very easy to drink.

Overall, I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more coconut in this one, but on the whole, it is still a pretty decent stout. The vanilla really sweetens up the drink and makes this one taste more like a milk stout than an RIS. If they were to ramp up the coconut in this one, it could be a very good beer.

Appearance - The beer was a deep black color with mocha bubbles.

Smell - The nose has a muted level of coconut and some bitter malts.

Taste - My initial impression is that there is not enough coconut. The coconut exists, but is overwhelmed by bitter malts. It almost seems like over-toasted coconut. The promised vanilla really is present at all. In itself, the coffee-like malts make for a solid Russian Imperial Stout. I just want the promised coconut.

Mouthfeel - The mouthfeel is nice and smooth. With low carbonation, it goes down easy.

Overall - The beer needs more coconut and vanilla to justify the label.
