Poured from a growler into a pint glass
Appearance -The beer pours a clear deep golden amber color with a small head of white foam. The head fades very fast leaving a light bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strongest of a heavy bready smell mixed with some notes of toast and a bit of wheat. There is a rather strong presence of some sweeter smells of caramel and toffee, along with notes of herb and earth. Rounding it all out is a touch of pine and a hint of cocoa.
Taste – The taste begins with a heavy bready malt mixed with a strong presence of caramel and toffee that were in the nose. There is also a bit of hoppiness in the form of an earthy and light floral hop. As the taste advances the hops grow slightly stronger at the expense of some of the caramel. All the while notes of yeast and some hay and dirt come into the taste, with a light flavor of coffee. The mix of flavors takes the taste to its end, leaving one with a slightly more malty, but nicely balanced and easy drinking taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is light to medium with a lower carbonation. For the lower abv., ESB style, and flavor profile of the brew, the feel is rather well done, accentuating the light flavors nicely and making it easy drinking.
Overall – A rather nice ESB. Don’t see this style brewed too often anymore, so glad to give it run, and one to try if you have the opportunity.
