473 mL can from the LCBO; coded 110 8275 (possibly Oct 2 2018) and served slightly chilled.
Pours clear golden-amber, with one finger of loose, frothy white head that falls apart within 90 seconds. A fat, foamy collar is the only remnant of note, other than some scant, spindly patches of lace. The aroma is not too far off from what I'd expect of the style - caramelized malt sweetness, with some doughy bread and vague suggestions of stewed fruit. S'awright.
Actually a very solid lager - it tastes primarily of clean, grainy pale malts, with notes of caramelized sweetness and nutty bread filling in most of the remainder. Not too sweet, either, which is exactly how I prefer my festbiers. Very light hop flavours round out the back end - I'd describe them as earthy and a bit grassy - followed by a grainy finish and a pristine aftertaste. Light bodied, with middling carbonation levels that prickle the palate gently. Fantastic drinkability - I know it's a little over 6% (and thus, not an ideal session pick), but I could still see myself pounding a few of these back around a campfire.
Final Grade: 3.88, a highly worthy B+. I've only had one other beer from Brock Street (their light blonde), so I wasn't really expecting much here... but Brocktoberfest is actually a damn fine festbier, one that I'd place on par with Hofbrau's - and you just know a domestic lager is good when it matches up to the German equivalents. The fruitiness is the one thing that doesn't quite belong, but it's unobtrusive and blends into the background, so I can deal with it. Brock Street doesn't seem to distribute to Sarnia, but if they send a few flats of this my way next fall, I'll be buying up my fair share.
