Draining from can so can't say much of the look but agree with the first review there are some odd flavours. The sourness stands out as unpleasant and unwelcome. It seems like a cross between a sour and and an IPA or wheat beer more than a Scotch ale, which is more robust. Price was a bit steep as well. Not an expert taster but am not a fan.

473ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for about $3.95 CDN.

Appearance - Dark amber or caramel colored beer. Good clarity and about a finger and a half of loose off-white head. Moderate staying power and a very small amount of lacing sticking to the glass.

Smell - Caramel mostly, but the nose is subdued. Hints of ripe plums, figs and other dark fruits. Slightly strange sour note mixed in there.

Taste - Minerally, thin caramel veneer, with earthy notes in behind. That slightly unusual sour note on the nose makes its way into the flavor with sort of a orange/lime combo that transitions to more mineral flavors. Booze is well disguised. Caramel notes stick out more as the brew warms, so this really should be consumed at cellar temperature.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, crisp carbonation, probably more fizzy than most.

Overall - Usually a fan of scotch ales, but did not care for this one at all. Some strange aromas and flavors that detract from what is a usually a fairly malty experience (and maybe just a bit sweeter too). This scotch ale was rather minerally tasting. Definitely glad to be done with both of these.

473 mL can from the LCBO; there's a date stamp, but it's smudged. Served barely chilled.

Pours a clear brownish-copper colour, giving rise to half a finger of smooth, foamy, buff-coloured head. It melts off within a minute or two, soon reduced to a creamy collar and a few filmy wisps on the surface; minimal lace production, but it looks fine. Decidedly malty on the nose - I'm getting treacle, burnt sugar and sponge toffee, mixed in with bready, toasty malts, caramel and dates.

It's more sweet at the start, with toffee and molasses dominating the forefront; this is followed up with some toasted bread and biscuit by mid-sip, as well as fruity suggestions of date, raisin, and a touch of nuttiness. Finishes with caramel and root beer sweetness, with a touch of leafy hop bitterness lingering into an aftertaste of toffee. The 7% doesn't translate over into the flavour much, but you can tell it's there. Medium in body, with fairly assertive carbonation that gives a crisp, lively prickliness to this brew's otherwise smooth mouthfeel. Average drinkability for the style, in that one can should be plenty for most.

Final Grade: 3.71, a serviceable B grade. Brock Street's is a pretty good Scotch Ale, but I'd hesitate to call it anything more than that - I do enjoy its malty, rich flavour profile, but it's definitely not complex, nor do I think it'll be all that memorable in the long run. If you prefer sweeter, stronger beers then this should serve your needs just fine, but it's not something worth going out of your way for. That being said, if I bump into it again later this year (or next), I'll most likely give it another try.
