Pineapple Sour by Brock Street Brewing in Whitby, Ontario. 5 percent alcohol. This beer has a thin head that dissipates quickly. Beer is yellow and cloudy. Indiscriminate smell. Taste is tart but I can detect no pineapple, which is disappointing and a significant flaw, in my opinion, given this is billed a pineapple sour. The beer is light bodied with a prickly wet mouthfeel and a smooth finish. Grade: B-

473 mL can from the LCBO; coded 502-503 2035 and served barely chilled.

Pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, initially topped with an inch of soapy, sparkling white head that disintegrates within a minute or two. A few patches of lace are scattered about afterwards, with a frothy collar and filmy cap remaining in place - looks fine to me. Subdued pineapple fruit on the nose, with hints of grainy malt, grassy hops and lemon yogurt.

It's a mild mannered sour, but I like it - I'm tasting lactic acidity/very mild funk and pineapple fruitiness at first, followed by grainy pale malts, lemon and sour apple. Pineapple continues into the back end, with lacto sourness in the aftertaste that peters out quickly as the sip trends dry. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that stays crisp and prickly well into the session; it's crisp, refreshing, and very drinkable, maybe even sessionable.

I picked up another can of this (522-523 2068) and was less than impressed. Very overcarbonated; tastes like gritty grains, pineapple and cardboard, with moderate lactic acidity. Beautiful lacing, though. I get the feeling that this is one of those beers that doesn't do well on unrefrigerated shelves, and/or varies from batch to batch. I've gotta drop its grade considerably, but may give it one more shot in the future.

Final Grade: 3.43, a B-
