Demented Brewing Co. "Voodoo Lemondrop IPA"
16 fl. oz. can, coded "9/1/17" and sampled on 10/26/17
$4.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well there's a hell of a lot of carbonation in it! I got less than half beer and mostly head with just a standard pour. That's OK, I'll just wait a bit, and that usually helps to form a better head in the end anyway. It's a cloudy golden with an orange sheen, almost like a hefeweizen. The head is white, and what was just foamy at first has become rocky. With the exception of the heavy haze, which honestly makes me a little nervous, it's a good looking glass of beer. The aroma is yeasty - haha, for some reason I didn't expect that even though it's so obvious. Oh well. There's some citrusy hop to it as well. The flavor is much more citrusy, and I definitely get the lemon, but unfortunately the yeast follows along as well. It's quite distracting and I'm not sure if it would have helped if I let the can sit in the fridge for longer or not because all of that carbonation would have stirred it up - and of course I now realize why it's got all of that carbonation. In fact, I wonder if this is even filtered at all. Perhaps it's just this batch. I'm planning to try their other beers so I'll pick up a replacement next time I stop by Roger Wilco in Pennsauken, NJ. The malt is basic golden malt, 2-row or perhaps "pale", and there might be a little bit of wheat to it. It's a perfect base for the hops, giving it a little sweetness to back it and not interfering. Back to the hops, there's more than just lemony citrus, there's some mango, tangerine, and light earth and pine, maybe even some very mild grapefruit. It's not that bitter, no more bitter than many pale ales, perhaps 40 or so IBUs which also works given the hop selection. I don't find any alcohol, and really not that much alcohol 'presence' either, but at 6.5% abv I wouldn't really expect to. Ahhh, there's some nice lemon in the burp! I'd call it medium-light to medium in body, and there's an effervescent crispness to it that gently tingles the tongue. Looking back I still have a solid head covering the entire surface of the beer so that's good, but the lacing that it's left behind is limited. So it seems that lack of filtration, or less time than is needed for the beer to drop clear is a problem here. Perhaps some Biofine would help; it's expensive but given the price of over $4 a can I think they can afford it. I see the potential but the yeast stands in the way of the flavor and aroma - forget about the appearance, who cares, cloudy IPAs are in right now. I'm hoping for more but at this point I have to rate it as I see it. Still, I'd suggest you give it a shot if you happen to see it.
