Bourbon Barrel AleBourbon Barrel Ale
Notes: Goodwood Bourbon Barrel Ale is refined by its time in the cask, not defined by it. The process produces balanced, adjunct-free ale with delicious bourbon notes. This copper-toned beaut is medium-bodied and malt-forward with a hint of sweet caramel. It finishes strong and dry with notes of vanilla and bourbon-soaked oak.

If you like the taste of bourbon, I think I found your craft beer to drink...

As far as its other attributes go - look and smell - this is a very good beer. Great dark caramel coloration with thin, foamy head makes for a great presentation to the eyes. The smell was sweet bourbon forward with hints of some spices, all of it blending quite well. But that's about it for the exceptional nature of the beer - the rest is just solid enough. The mouthfeel is more carbonated than anything else and the taste follows along with that bourbon scent noted through the nose. So much so I can't really pull out anything else distinctive about the brew. Again, solid enough and something I wouldn't mind trying again.

Hazy, dark amber to chestnut with two finger plus head. Light smell of cheap sweet whiskey with a little caramel, wood, and malt. Flavor is pretty strong in general booze, with a little borboun and not much else. There's a grassy hippiness as well. Unlike every other bad spirit barrel aged beer I've had, it doesn't suffer from excessive sweetness, in fact it's pretty dry. Medium mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation.

12 oz bottle purchased from Blue Mound Liquor in Luverne, MN
Boiler brandy snifter

A sienna brown color with a finger of head receding to 1/4 finger. Some lace and alcohol legs.

Aroma of dry wood, spruce, caramel/amber malt, and very slight nuttiness.

Flavor brings caramel malt, faint dark fruit, very faint nuttiness, slight suggestions of apricot, and some spruce and oak on the back end. Very very slight bourbon character.

Feel is sticky and slick, with a good amount of bourbon burn and alcohol burn. Dry scathing finish.

Overall, a bit disappointing but no surprise there. No real desire to buy it again or really even finish my glass.

A: The beer is quite hazy brownish amber in color. It poured with a half finger high dark beige head that died down a bit but never completely faded away.
S: Light to moderate aromas of caramel malts, oak, and bourbon are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the caramel malts take a back seat to the flavors of oak and bourbon. Except for the bourbon flavors, no other alcohol is detectable.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a nice ale if you are looking for something that has bourbon aromas and flavors without having a heavy body.

Deep brown with copper tinting. There's a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering three-quarters of the top. The aroma is of faint pear and green apple from the white ash. I'm tasting very sweet bourbon with some juicy green apple from the white ash and then you get just a touch of boozy bourbon in the back of the palate. The mouth is a bit watery and thin. Not my bag.

Appearance - Pours deep plum color with thin off white head that quickly dissipates. No lacing.

Aroma - Plum, fig light bourbon aroma some oak and vanilla.

Taste - Very watered down bourbon, bitter fruit taste like they mixed the flavors and then added half water.

Feel - Light very watered down super thin..

Overall - The aroma was promising but this is almost undrinkable, very thin and watered down.

12 oz bottle with a Feb. 2017 bottling date.
Pours with a lovely, clear, copper colored body but the head is somewhat fizzy and short-lived. Minimal lacing.
Mild yet dominant bourbon barrel notes in the aroma. The flavor is more balanced, with malts mixing with fine bourbon notes. Hints of vanilla and caramel. These mix especially nicely in the aftertaste.

Feel: medium-light bodied that seems too thin; semi-dry finish.

Poured a slightly cloudy dark brown color with a small tan head. It smelled like a brown ale. Nutty and malty, not much bourbon aromas. Tasted odd. Kinda metallic. I think it's the water.

Chestnut brown, clear, with a slim and fading head, this is an interesting beer. The aroma is of vanilla, with hints of charred wood, amber malt, and bourbon. The taste is smooth, with a lot of wood and boozy flavor, smokey, but not any real warmth. The brew has a medium body and a flavorful finish. Much better than expected. Rich and deep in flavor.

Pours a cloudy copper color, very little head and no lacing.
Dark fruit, malt and some booze on the nose.
Flavor is quite similar.
Thin and watery, no finish at all.
I remember seeing this in the store for $12-14 for a 4 pack. (Maybe a wider).
Glad I passed.

Nice clear amber color. The aroma was quite subdued with only an imagined hint of bourbon. There was a little caramel and dried fruit as well. The taste is very mild with some sweet malts and a tiny bit of bourbon. There is a caramel or toffee flavor as well. The beer is quite thin. This really doesn't do much for me. If they gave this baby steroids and soaked it in the barrel a bit longer it could be great.

As with other Goodwood beers I don't get any barrel at all. Not even good wood! Lol. What I do get is some malty Old Ale characteristics. Malty grain, barley, crabapple, date, fig and maple were all experienced. Very light in feel. This left me wanting more but it has some good bones.

Enjoyed on tap.

Nice cloudy copper color with minimal head, and some lacing.

Smelled earthy, oaky, and perhaps a little sweet bourbon.

Tasted similar. Finished smooth with a little bite in the middle.

Feel was medium.

Overall, I enjoyed this beer. I am not sure how to compare it to some of the similar beer listed here on BA, however. It was nothing like Arrogant Bastard, for example. If I rate it as a stand alone beer, which I did, then it receives higher makes. On the other hand, if I compare it to other beers listed, then it would receive lower marks. It lacked the bitterness found in several others in the style. Oh well, sometimes one simply has to enjoy a good beer, and that I did.

Pour: light amber pour with a creamy one finger head that quickly dissapated and left little to no lace on the glass.

Smell: light malt sweetness with oakey tones, slight bourbon smell in the rear of the nose.

Taste: heavy fruity tones, apricots come to the fore, the middle is unremarkable, the finish is clean with slight bourbon flavors.

Feel: this is where this beer fell short to me, there is little to no body to this beer.

Overall: a good refreshing beer, but it lacks "backbone" for lack of a better term.

Aroma consists of heavily toasted oak, herbal hops, and caramel. There's a touch of fruity specialty malt character.

Flavor reveals a dominance of fruity specialty malt and a light sourness that could be due to a modest barrel infection. The finish is toasted and lightly caramelly, with a hint of bourbon. That light sourness kinda kills it.
