poured from a 16oz can into a rocks glass. pours hazy orange with a firm white foam head. orange, passionfruit and grapefruit on the nose. taste follows with a bitter, grapefruit-like bitterness. a bit of a oniony, vegetal thing going on in the finish as it warms. medium-full mouthfeel with a nice level of carbonation. really good, but i’m a sucker for NZ hops.

Canned 11/21/22 (2 weeks old)
Appearance: Pours a completely hazy (less than 5% clarity) medium to light orange color that layers out with a massive white head. SRM of 7. (4.25)
Aroma: Strong aromas of bitter grapefruit, passionfruit citrus, with some berry, peach, and grape sweetness underneath.
Flavor: Strong and juicy flavors of grapefruit citrus, white pine, passionfruit, with some pineapple, berry, and sweet grape notes underneath.
Feel: Medium to heavier bodied. Strong carbonation and full-mouthfeel. Drinks smooth and soft, but not overly sweet.
Compared to The Veil Wakeup 12/2022: Pours lighter, hazier, larger head. Stronger aromas. More passionfruit, pineapple, white pine and sweet grape notes. Smoother and jucier.
Compared to Half Acre Double Daisy Cutter Nelson 1/8/2023: Pours lighter, similar head. Stronger aromas. More juicy grapefruit, pineapple, white grapes. Less resinous tangerine, peach, pine. Juicier and cleaner. Winner: Hop Butcher
Overall: Love the idea here and tons of great flavors from the three New Zealand hops. Hits the Nelson, but adds some tropical complexity from the Pacific Sunrise and Riwaka. Haven't had too much of the Pacific Sunrise, but the Riwaka shows. A classic Hop Butcher smooth and soft body, not too sweet. It's going to get even better with a bit of age I think. (Rating: 4.19+)

I have found that I have a thing for New Zealand hops. Riwaka in particular. So, I had to grab this for Thanksgiving weekend while at the brewery (along with a 2nd four pack of the amazing Double Saaz!) I'm getting a very muted nose compared to other HB DIPA's. It makes up for that in taste as I'm really enjoying it. There's the super soft full mouthfeel as HB always does well. The beer has a good balance between sweet and bitter for a hazy. I love the hints of pineapple and banana coconut I get from the hop mix. Overall a pretty good beer. Not HB's best, but worth buying again or drinking in the taproom now that it's finally open.
