Drank on tap at Haymaker Bar & Kitchen, New York, NY
Served in a wine glass
Pitch black appearance. The beer had no head and looked completely still in the glass. After trying a sip, I discovered that it indeed was. No lacing or legs either.
The aroma was interesting but contained notes of oxidation. Bourbon came through strong. Loads of vanilla. Big coconut presence too. Fairly sweet overall. Moderately roasty. A metallic quality was noticeable initially, but it slowly dissipated. As the beer sat, the vanilla and the overall sweetness intensified.
The flavor profile was disappointing, especially at first. There was an intense oxidative quality that reminded me a lot of wet cardboard. Malty and a touch sweet up front. Really roasty and dry in the center. Loads of intense booze and woodiness. Wet paper notes kicked in big time on the back end and trailed into the finish. More sharp, whiskey-like booziness as well.
Totally flat and flaccid mouthfeel. Thinner bodied than anticipated for the style. Fairly watery.
This barrel-aged version of Hell Within had potential but, between the oxidative notes, the lack of carbonation and the intense booziness, was a bit of a train wreck. I would love to sample this beer again if it was brewed/stored under more optimal conditions.
