Being a New Yorker I can't believe that I've yet to try LIC Beer Project. I went out to Beer Shop, NYC to correct this problem.
The Genesis was poured from the tap. It had a clear pale straw, slightly golden color. A fingernail length layer of sudsy film covered the surface like a soft blanket. Good retention with layers of swirly lace.
An interesting progression of aromas developed throughout. At first, there was a typical Pilsner malt sweetness. Yet, this was tinged with subtle zesty tones of citrus peel. Well into the drink a modestly herbal and dank aroma takes hold which is surprisingly IPA like. This is accompanied by earthy tones of grass, fresh straw and hay.
As with the aroma, the initial taste has a pilsner malt sweetness with a citrus finish. Light bodied, perhaps bordering on medium, crisp and smooth. The carbonation is moderate and well balance. Beyond the malt body, a grassy and earthy hops bitterness takes hold that changes the complexion of the drink. The palate and finish become I increasingly dry while the hops bitterness lingers. However, the citrusy quality of the hops also develops, thus creating an interesting palate that is both juicy, dry and earthy.
A well done hoppy pilsner and a creative take on the style without totally sacrificing the appropriateness to style.
