i have not had nearly enough beer from these guys, such positive commentary out there. i was bummed to not get a chance to check out the brewery when i was in the city but i will be back, and at least i found one of their beers to try! this is an oat based strong ipa with a heavy handed vics secret hopping. i like this hop a lot, but i especially like it in this dry earthy porridge malt sort of context. to me, vics secret is unique among the prominent australian hops because it has an almost savory element, rather than the tropical fruit and white wine complexion that seems to be more common in hops such as galaxy. i think the savory, vegetal, even umami properties of this hop are amazing with the oats. in the absence of much barley sweetness, the hops and oats really create a unique synergy. its hard to make unique beer when everyone around you is using all the same ingredients and employing all the same processes, so it was really cool to get to drink one of these, finally something unique to my palate in the hazy ipa category. it has a lot of body, but only a little hop bite, and doesnt drink like a double ipa at all. smooth and silky from the oats, unique lingering hoppy finish from the vics secret, and the familiar and welcoming fruitiness of the mosaic there too. delicious and fresh, hope to try more of their stuff next visit!

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2018, Blue Session. Semi-hazy golden color. Aroma has lots of orange rind and classic hop notes. Taste is sweetish and malty with resiny hops. Classic, west coast style IPA.

At the brewery in LIC, Queens, NY. Pours a mildly opaque burnt orange, smells like grape must, pine resin, and a hint of alchohol, taste follows the nose with sweet and sticky hop/ pine resin candy and green grape flesh, finishes with a bitter citrus pith and a crescendo of dankness and grape must, this beer is medium bodied and finishes with a prickly bitter stickiness. I am transported to the hop or grape on the vine engorgered with ripeness, a true lust for life. Yams!
