Full Imperial pint at the Underground. Apparently this is a 'special' contract brew for the Cactus Club restaurant chain, and yet this pub nabbed one of their kegs. Oh well, works for me.
This beer appears a clear, glassy pale golden yellow hue, with one fat finger of puffy, somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves some decent pockmarked cement wall lace around the glass as it gently subsides.
It smells of bready, lightly biscuity pale grainy malt, a twinge of overripe lemon rind, and leafy, earthy hops. The taste is more softly biscuity, bready, and faintly doughy pale malt, a slightly astringent hollow citrus fruitiness, and aspirationally crisp leafy, weedy hops.
The carbonation is light, airy, and subsequently a tad frothy, the body medium-light in weight, and generally quite smooth. It finishes barely off-dry, the surprising crispness of both the grain and the hops kind of tugging at my palate.
While not exactly a veritable noble pilsner, this offering does have a pleasant enough dose of edgy (in the good way) malt and understated sassy hops. Kind of the missing link between a plain-ass pale malt lager and a Czech or German Pils, but wavering a bit more towards the former, hence the designation here. I can see this fitting right in with Cactus Club's trendy, beautiful people atmosphere - challenging, but not overly so.
