22oz bottle from 12/19/16 release, New Belgium glass.

Dark deep red brown beer with a thin head. There's a flourish of light khaki bubbles, but they fade post haste.

Sweet bourbon, vanilla, warm spice, a little heat lurks.

Rum raisin, dark sugar, that warm spice again, and booze bitterness balances the inherent sweetness of the style. The wood contributes a lovely dose of vanilla and some woody tannins that are blended expertly with both the bourbon that was first aged in there and the beer that followed.

Spiky, active carbonation and a thinish body. It fits together very well and isn't overly hot. It's balanced. It was obviously in a barrel and should have that bite.

This is close to, if not, the best barleywine I've had, and I'm sure it's the best barrel-aged barleywine I've had.

Pretty cool to try Hawaii's first bottled (or canned) barrel aged beer. These are exciting times we are living in. I'm admittedly not a huge Barleywine fan, in fact it's probably one of my least favorite styles. Up there with musty Saisons. I don't like things that taste like "Horse Blanket" or "Hay". This one does it for me though. Sure, I don't have the refined palate of some folks, but I know what I like, and I like this.

It's got so many levels going on. Starts with dark fruits and not overly strong malts, then an earthy molasses, then to creamy/buttery, finishes with a pleasant oaky booziness. Gets more complex as it warms. I'll definitely have to go back for another. Huge congrats to Lanikai Brewing, the bar has been set, in my opinion.
