Picked this one up in Yosemite at the Tuolumne Meadows General Store when we were backpacking down there earlier this summer.
Lovely clear amber body with a good multi-finger light flan cloured head that slowly meanders back down towards the liquid, leaving chunky lacing along the glass.
Nose is immediate upon pouring with elements of caramel and light floral/grassiness. Digging in a little more it actually carries a strong strawberry jam flavour that really takes the forefront. There's still some grassiness and a bit of straw.
Flavour is a little more all over the place, with elements of the aromas mentioned, but a little more disjointed. The strawberry jam fades into more of just kind of a faint backside berry suggestion, as the hops, still fairly front and center, migrate more towards what I think of as more of a NZ type profile. Some white wine, pear, kiwi, some spice, some faint grassiness, but really much more white wine-forward (not buttery chardonnay white wine, more spicy/sauvignon. This can get a little overwhelming to me, so I kind of wish it had stuck with the grassy/jammy notes. The bitter finish is a culmination of this profile that also kind of plays up the alcohol profile. The malts are in there, but they are secondary. Sweet caramel and some light toast and honey.
This is enjoyable overall, but it starts stronger than it finishes for me. Like I said, this particular hop profile gets overwhelming pretty quickly for me, and it's pretty pronounced. I'm glad to have grabbed it, and there is joy to be found, but I think 22oz is more than I would want in a single sitting. Cheers!
