Growler pour into a curved imperial pint glass. Gift from a good friend who just spend a quiet week up there.
Appearance: Imagine a freshly refinished cherry wood floor, still wet with lacquer and reflecting the bright morning sun off it surface. There are a few errant bubbles here and there, but no head. Please note that I do not believe this is a fault of the brewer, as the growler may be a day or two past its prime.
Smell: Sage and sweet rose hips. Underlying dark honey and crystal malts.
Taste: It’s like walking out behind the brewery, and continuing deep into the woods. Earthy and piney, with a strong highlight of sage. It’s definitely beer, but I’m drinking mountains too.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, light carbonation (again, not their fault).
Overall: I am a HUGE fan of Mammoth’s IPA 395, and this beer is like that, but dialed bay about 75%. Very drinkable with a low ABV to boot. They do an amazing job incorporating their environment (sage and pine) into their brewing. My only wish is that it was just a touch drier. My first pint was brilliant, but the second is starting to get a bit cloying. That may be the under-carbonation, but I think it could do with a few points lower on the attenuation. Overall, very well done.
