4.8% ABV
Real Canadian Superstore –Main/Thompson (Milton, Ontario, Canada)

$2.53
The beer pours a translucent medium gold colour with a thin white head which sticks around for 10-15 minutes. The aroma is cereal malts and herbal hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is cereal grains, some hop earthiness, and some light spiciness in the finish.

Golden and hazy with little carbonation, and a whitish head.
Smells of malts with a hint of sourness.
Tastes of malts, slightly white wine like, and with a crisp bitterness.
Medium, light body, with a crisp, dry finish. Medium to low carbonation.
Had this on tap at Abe Erb Jan 20th, 2018. Well done for the style.

Looks good. Pale, slightly hazy, straw yellow under a moderate head surrendering decent lace. Mouthfeel stands in rather marked contrast to a lot of other koelsches I've had: more dry and chalky than juicy and hoppy. But it recovers itself as it warms up. Sweet juicy nose laid over grassy hops. Apple aroma. Drinkable, mostly ordinary.

Clear with a slight hazy straw color and poor activity. Foamy white 3 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes, with poor legs. Flavors of caramel, lemon, sweet grains, and floral hops. Slick and smooth full body with prickly carbonation. Light strength finish, soft grainy feel with very subtle flowery hops but lots of caramel (too much). Highly accessible (way too much) with minimal bitterness. Lacks the proper Kölsch effect. Not much complexity. Great freshness though, with a nice well rounded body. Overall average quality craft.

On tap @ Bent Elbow & Abe Erb - pale hazed gold with a bone white rocky cap. Aroma is demure, grainy, cerels light grassiness, some green apple peel tones and some mineral. Light, dry lightly bitter character. Rounded and finished well. This is the Dry-hoppy end of the Kolsch style and it carries that off well.

473 ml can served fairly cold into a pint glass. Another brewery popping up for the KW area.
Appearance - Pale yellowy beer with a finger of brilliant white head. modest staying power, some lace and plenty of carbonation.
Smell - Clean and grainy with a light citrus note of orange and lemon and some grape like aromas as well. Definitely appealing.
Taste - Middling bitterness, traces of wheat like grain. No citrus here and the suggestion of grape is gone too. Not bad and no off flavors but nothing separating itself from the pack.
Mouthfeel - Good carbonation with a softer body, but lacking the crispness I've come to associated with the best in class.
Overall - Abe Erb's 1857 kolsch certainly isn't a bad beer, but lacks the signature crispness from this style and is lacking the suggestion of grape which is another feature I find appealing in the style. Worth a try, but don't expect to be blown away.

473 mL can from the LCBO; no date stamp as far as I can tell. Served well-chilled.
Pours a translucent, visibly unfiltered straw-yellow colour, with one finger of frothy white head receding away steadily over the next 3-4 minutes. A small amount of lace is generated, with a modest, foamy collar remaining atop. The aroma is understated, with notes of grainy pale malts, bready dough, grassy hay, and banana chips.
The taste is more of the same, with pale malt flavours of grain husk, wheaty bread and dough mostly carrying the load here. Hints of apple, and again that subtle banana note; not something I really expect from a kölsch, but not exactly off-putting. Finishes with a light note of grassy hay and mild, leafy bitterness, with a light wheaty sweetness lingering into the aftertaste. I don't entirely dislike this beer, but there's not much to it. Light in body, with relatively soft carbonation and a smooth, wet mouthfeel that feels a bit limp to me. Unexciting I suppose, yet fairly easy to enjoy, at least for me (though I tend to like most German-style lagers).
Final Grade: 3.44, a passable B-. Abe Erb's 1857 Kölsch-Styled Lagered Ale made for a decent introduction to this relatively young brewpub. It's basically a pale wheat ale IMO, without the crisp texture and clean flavour that most top-quality lagers and kölsch-style brews tend to share. That doesn't make it a bad beer, in fact I don't mind it at all... but I also don't think it really stands out from the swarm of "lagered ales" that have been popping up across Ontario lately. An ok, approachable refresher that I may pick up again, but not what I'd call a great rendition of this (challenging to nail) style.
