8.5% ABV is not overly big for a DIPA, and that may be why its smoothness is appealing. Many believe this is a West Coast style, but I think its chewiness and huge nose lean more toward New England. Piney, dank and citrus pretty much describe the flavor. King Julius it ain't, but certainly worth a hophead's time and money.

10/12/16...pours clear gold with an edge, mostly see through. Foamy top citrus nose, lemons. light pine. Bright citrus taste, juicy, rolls into a fast and firm bitter. Refreshingly bitter - almost absurdly so - and quite flavorful. Excellent. Damn good double.

Thanks again to New Jersey Beer Ambassador SammyJaxx for this brilliant gem.
Wow. I want to skip straight to the overall. I have found too many Citra/Mosaic IPA's and DIPA's that hit you over the head. Contractual Obligation shows an amazingly balanced approach to these hops. Citrusy, fruity, a tad dank, and overall very "fresh" tasting. But these all work together. Hopped enough to be respected yet subtle enough to be admired.
Damn fine DIPA.

Pours orange/gold with a small amount of head (dissipates quickly). Smells like mango, pineapple, peaches, very slight citrus. The mosaic is definitely more prominent. Soft, tropical flavors with an undercurrent of grapefruit and orange. Bitterness only comes in at the end. Smooth mouthfeel and light/medium body with mild carbonation.

Picked this up a while back at Magnify, after having this on tap there a while back. I did enjoy this beer quite a bit as it was easy to quaff but there wasn't anything outstanding about this. What made this beer so enjoyable was how smooth it was, as there wasn't anything harsh, strong, or acrid about it. From start to finish, this was just an American Double/Imperial IPA that never really tasted or felt like one!

This had a good pour to it, with a golden hue that was slightly hazy, a bit of shine to the body, and a moderately fluffy head that quickly settled down. Not a lot of lacing was left behind in my pint glass as I worked my way through this as it was quite thin and the liquid seemed to settled down the side of my pint glass relatively quickly after each sip. Tropical fruits, dank weed, mild nectar, and a herbal undertone could be found in the nose with much of the latter two being found in the taste. Quite fresh, this had the feel of fresh pine and mint as each sip was quite brisk in the taste and aftertaste. Loved the balance of this beer and how nicely it finished, as it had the feeling of being dry-hopped.

Thankfully, the alcohol was quite recessed in this as I only felt it and a slight warming effect once I finished everything off. More reminiscent of something from California than New England, there was enough going on here that it didn't need excessive hops or juice to stand out. A nice and slick mouthfeel and lots of nuanced flavor drew me in as this was quite the welcome change from the other beers that I had from Magnify that started to taste the same after a while. Quite possibly their best offering!
