Collab w/ with our good friends Civil Society Brewing. This 8.0% Double Dry Hopped Imperial is a summertime Imperial IPA, meaning it has a lighter body and is slightly drier than most of our Imperial IPAs while still being insanely juicy. We hopped this beer with Idaho 7, Amarillo, Mosaic Powder and a new hop called Michigan Copper, that gives notes of Hawaiian Punch (for real, Google it).

8/4/20...hazy pale gold with a ring of white foam and some light patched top. Pale citrus nose, some lemon. Pale citrussy malt bitter with robust rind and pulpy flavors. Quite nice.

Decanted from a 16 oz (473 ml) can into a Captain Lawrence muffin top glass; canned 07/14/20.
A: Pours a cloudy, golden-orange color with a solid, two finger, foamy, white head, more than rim retention, and broad but sticky lacing.
S: Aromas of pitted fruit (nectarine > peach), tangerine and some lime citrus. Moderately resiny. Caramel, barley grain, and honeysuckle definitely appreciable under the fruit.
T: More semisweet than semidry. Flavors favor caramel, barley, nectarine, and lime citrus. Complex with pine, resin, and solid bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with excellent carbonation. Nearly creamy, substantial mouthfeel.
O: A collaboration with Civil Society Brewing Co., Surprise, Surprise is a flavorful IIPA. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

How about a nice Hawaiian Punch? No need to go back to your youth if you have a can of this as the feel was quite similar to that. It had to be the Idaho 7 and Michigan Copper hops, which were completely new to me before I had this beer. They were enjoyable though as this beer had a wonderful, tropical tone to it and slick juiciness that lacked the tangy, astringent feel of Citra. The end result was a dank, juicy beer that went down easily while keeping the alcohol at bay!
interesting pour to this as the beer had a muted goldenrod hue to it with a hint of earthy brown in the mix for good measure. Plenty of these new hops, tropical fruit, honey, and a hint of sour grass in the nose. The taste had nearly all of those in greater amounts along with citrus pith, booze, and a bit of urine (yeah, I said it) to boot. Sweet and dank notes that lingered on the palate were reminiscent of the Hawaiian Punch that I had as a kid which somehow, balanced out the dank, dark, and piss-like notes that gave this beer depth, complexity, and a heavy-handedness that kept it grounded. The odd hop profile ensured that a tangerine slickness coated everything over and kept it light, while allowing for a unique taste that took a while for me to (mentally) digest and process...
This wasn't terribly strong in the alcohol department though I could feel a mild buzz by the time I worked my way through this can. Only one, solid ring of lacing remained, which was indicative of this beer in general. The flavor was solid but there was still something new to be processed here, as this wasn't quite like anything I had before. Seek this out if you want something different or are a fan of either brewer - their footprint was evident here with the end result being a tropical beer with dark and mysterious undertones. Plenty to enjoy here as long as you have the time to unpack this!

L-Light yellow, not hazy but not completely clear, 1 finger head that settles to a thin white cap.....lacing is slightly more than moderate and doesn't cling but doesn't run down the side either
S-faint aroma of tropical hops
T-Lots of sweet tropical fruity hops with a solid malt base........juicy fruit gum, orange, pineapple, tangerine, guava......mild bitterness in the finish with some resinous pine and some black pepper
F-Medium plus, thick and creamy......low carbonation.....ABV somewhat hidden
O- Taste is good but just not getting much from the nose (and at times just an odd raw egg smell).......this can was released a few weeks ago so that could be a factor.....otherwise tasty beer which would score higher if the nose were better

I had this on draught at the brewery the night before the can release. It pours a turbid, golden-brown color with a thin, milk-white head and minimal lacing. I suspect the pour would be more attractive from the can. It features an aromatic fruity smell of tangerine, lemon, honey, and floral hops. The taste is complex and pleasing: tangerine, honey, and pine needles, with a solid malt base. I'm not familiar with Idaho 7 and Michigan Copper hops but could taste the Mosaic. It finishes quite bitter but not astringent. It has a pleasing mouth feel with lively carbonation, and its 8% ABV gives it nice substance without impacting the pleasure of drinking it. Overall, it's a great collaboration between two quality regional brewers, with lots of flavor and thoroughly satisfying
