Yesterday for NBW, I had a can of an excellent new triple IPA from Magnify, so today I am returning with another IPA I bought at the same time called Thing of Beauty. Just like with the TIPA, I don't know the can date of this but it was likely to be some time in early December according to social media announcements about this beer's release. This is double dry-hopped with Citra and Motueka, and also features lactose. Sounds good, let's see what's in store...

Pour is pretty nice right off the bat. A stable and hazy golden-orange beer with a bit of a lighter bent to it towards the top of the glass, where it's crowned with a solid ring of foam that measures about a finger-and-a-half and recedes down to a half-finger, leaving behind consistent lacing and solid legs. Not much else to say, but it seems well-built!

The nose is nice and juicy upfront with spritzy lime, grapefruit, tangelo, and some passion fruit notes bubbling up to the top to greet me. A hint of herbalness and slight floral components also appear briefly here and there, while slight mango and white wine grape also pop out as it acclimates to being in my glass. A nice smelling beer with a lot of the best components of both featured hop varietals. Excited to sip!

Grapefruit, passion fruit, pineapple, and lime right off the bat with a good balance between everything happening. The mid-palate is a bit sweet and heavy (thanks, lactose) and I'm not sure it really melds well with the brighter and more vivacious hops in this one, but the finish luckily has some more solid flavors. Strong tangerine, herbal notes, and grassiness with even a hint of gooseberry in there. I do think the lactose addition takes this down a bit and keeps it from being great, as the carbonation is even a little bit lifeless and the feel is just kind of meh. I've actually had several very good lactose-inflected IPAs recently which have made me rethink my usual opinion on this divisive adjunct, but this one is not one of those examples. That's not to say this isn't a good beer, because it is. It's just taken down in important ways by an unnecessary additive ingredient.

Canned 7/31/18 (24 days ago)

L - sparkling 2-finger white head atop a gorgeous orange body.

S - apricot, melon, honey, herb, a little floral, citrus.

T - apricot jam spread atop fresh bread. Some dankness. Floral, sweet honeysuckle carries into the taste as well. Earthy middle, with some vegetal notes. Cabbage especially. Moderate-low bitterness. Low sweetness. Low booziness.

F - medium body with average carb.

O - a unique hop profile, but it doesn’t entirely work.

Cloudy yellow-orange with a finger-and-a-half of tightly-bubbled, off-white head. Spotty lacing.

Melon, light citrus, light vanilla and some white pepper hop burn.

Cream, vanilla, tangerine, honeydew and pineapple up front in the taste with even more of that peppery hop burn and a kiss of alcohol on the backend and fairly strong bitterness lingering in the aftertaste.

Medium bodied and a tad creamy with strong fizziness cutting through.

Pretty solid beer here. Interested to see how the flavors blend over the coming weeks. The carbonation isn't to my taste, but it's thick enough where it doesn't matter that much.

Pours straw in color. Nice white head. Really nice lacing. Aroma of lemon and tangerine. Taste follows the nose with mango, grapefruit and citra. Look forward to more from magnify.

I had this on draught at the brewery. It pours an opaque, light tangerine color with a thin, milk-white head and lacing. The nose features lemon, tangerine, melon, and a hint of vanilla. The taste includes lots of lactose/vanilla, lemon peel, and tangerine notes, with light, crisp Citra and Motueka hops at the finish. It's dry but not bitter; delicate and really tasty. All of the flavors blend to create a wonderful overall taste. There is no yeast burn. This ale features a nice creamy, silky mouth feel, with pleasant carbonation, and the 8% ABV gives it substance but you can easily drink a second pour. Overall, I feel like I should have more to say but this is one of Magnify's best DIPAs: lots of flavor and a tremendous mouth feel. I hope Thing of Beauty is brewed again.

On tap at Cloverleaf Tavern in Caldwell. Pours a golden effervescent hue with moderate frothing. Assertive aroma replete with hints of citrus and grapefruit. Similar overall flavor profile.
