Received in a surprise retaliation box from @Brehnert. Reviewed 6/10/19. Thanks Brad!
Stamped on top of label "040219". Stored at 42 degrees and served at 57 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.75.
First pour – Medium brown, hazy.
Body – Brown, opaque.
Head – Average (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour), dark tan, medium density, fizzy, short retention, diminishing to a one mm crown and no cap.
Lacing – Fair. Partial rings of tiny to small bubbles.
Aroma – 4 – Begins with cocoa followed by coffee.
Flavor – 3.75 – Begins just barely noticeably bitter with cocoa and coffee predominating, as in the aroma. The chilies initially hide, but then sneak in some after-burner heat and a bit of flavor on the after-belch. I’m sorry to say the cinnamon, one of my favorite spices, is undetectable as is the vanilla. No alcohol taste or aroma (8% ABV), no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, somewhat lively carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3.75 - Overall, a tasty and ambrosial offering although the fizziness was unexpected for an American Imperial Stout.
