Collaboration with Burnish Beer Co.

Banana Phone is a new 13.5% Imperial Stout brewed in collaboration with our good friends Randy at Burnish Beer Co. We set out to brew a Bananas Foster inspired thick Imperial Stout with as big of a mouthfeel we could achieve. We brewed this beer with over 50 pounds of Nilla Wafers in the mash and a heavy dose of lactose. We then conditioned this beer on an additional 200 pounds of Nilla Wafers and over 500 pounds of banana. We added vanilla for sweetness as well.

Picked this up a few weeks ago at Magnify, as i hadn't been there much in recent months. I don't go for their cans much anymore but their bottled offerings, like this, were worth the effort to obtain as this was quite sweet, smooth, and tasty from the get-go. While this was just a bit shy of being a banana overdose, the massive amount of presence of that, along with the complementary flavors, was enough to grab my attention throughout my time with this!

Interesting pour to this as this was quite dark and silky but the offsetting mocha head rapidly dwindled as soon as it hit the liquid and there was zero lacing to be seen once I started to work my way through this. Thankfully, this was the beer's worse aspect as I enjoyed everything else about it. Loads of bananas, booze, raspberry juice, and baked, sugary sweetness in the nose as it a bit much to take at first. As this warmed up, hints of banana bread and chocolate cake entered in as there was enough sugar, powder, and cake mix to give this the depth that it desperately needed. Lots of vanilla extract emerged in the taste as this was thin as that while being softened by fruit that served as this beer's hallmark.

Plenty of booze here and it showed on the palate, the aftertaste, and on my breath by the time I finished this off. Combined with a light carbonation and nearly nonexistent malt presence, this came across as quite strong and never let up on me. Wonderfully slick and full of subtle nuances that emerged at intermittent intervals, this was a fun beer that had a banana basis with plenty to surround it and enhance it's presence. One of Magnify's better offerings and enough to elevate their game above their more typical hazy, unfiltered offerings...
