a: murky, muddy light brown color with some dark amber notes and a hint of ruby red. 1/2 finger frothy rocky light tan head
s: tasted malts, light chocolate, grass, pine cones. a nice sweet caramel note with some brown sugar and toffee. huge bready doughy backbone
t: large bready doughy presence upfront. a hint of roasted malts and some chewy caramel behind that. grassy herbal notes behind that with a hint of brown sugar. there is a substantial tea leaf & cedar bitterness on the sides of the tongue though at the end of this...too much bitterness for the style
m: lighter mouthfeel with high carbonation
o: it's not a bad tasting beer, however it's got way too much bitterness for the style. everything else is there, but it's too bitter. a touch too murky on the appearance as well

Reviewed one day after release. Poured from 16 oz can into a pint glass. It pours an orange-brown color, similar to iced tea, with a foamy, light khaki color and thick, soapy lacing. On the nose there is toffee, chocolate, and whiffs of leather, tobacco, and earthy notes. The taste opens dry and earthy, with bitter char and burnt nuts. As the glass warm it sweetens with toffee and chocolate. But it never becomes really sweet and it finishes with more hop bitterness and spice than I anticipated. It drinks like a true pub beer with its 4% ABV but with fairly lively carbonation. Overall, Back to Basics is a perfect session beer. It's made for hanging out with friends and good conversation. It's great to see anyone brewing this style. It's fun to drink.
