Revenant, a new 9% Russian Imperial Stout. This unadulterated stout will bring you back to the craft beer days of old. Like its namesake, we are bringing this style back from its presumed death. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee, pretzels, and pumpernickel will lead way to herbal and floral notes from a responsible amount of late addition hops. Finished by a healthy amount of bitterness and gentle alcoholic warmth, this full bodied stout is perfect for the cold nights ahead. For all you looking for non-pastry stouts, this one is for you.

Poured from a 16 ounce can into a snifter.

Look- Black, frothy light brown head, opaque, average head retention and lacing.

Smell- Toasted oats, cocoa, slight coffee, weak strength of scent.

Taste- Toasted oats, slight cocoa, slight coffee, medium strength of flavor.

Feel- Between medium and full body, average carbonation, mild bitterness, moderately creamy, mildly mouth warming.

Overall- Black appearance with average head retention and lacing. Bouquet was weak in strength and malt heavy. Flavor was medium in strength, but also dominated by malt. Feel was a medium-full body with moderate creaminess and mildly mouth warming. Overall the malt flavor dominated and the hop flavors were just not vibrant enough to break through.

16 oz can.

Pours a dark cola brown color with a fat finger of frothy caramel head. Pretty good retention. Leaves a crown of lacing along the top of the glass.

Very strong aromas of dark chocolate fudge, roasted malts, coffee, char, and floral hops.

The flavor has tons of dark chocolate, burnt coffee, dark malts, caramel, and hazelnut. Very faint hop presence on the finish.

The feel is medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Exceptionally oily and slick.

Overall, this is a very good Russian imperial stout. It's a very roasted beer with plenty of bitterness, yet has plenty of sweeter chocolate and caramel malt notes.

Reviewed 3 days after release. Poured from 16 oz. can into a tulip glass. It pours nearly ink black with a half finger of creamy, khaki-colored head and thick, elegant, long-lasting lacing. The nose is outstanding: fudge, roasted malt, freshly-brewed coffee, tobacco smoke, and earthy char. Its taste offers everything I'd want in a Russian Imperial Stout, including acidic, burnt coffee, dark chocolate, nutty char, and a hint of caramel and dark fruit. It's largely bitter but there is a tasty balance of fruity sweetness. It's really delicious. The mouth feel is great; it's medium-bodied with moderate, appropriate carbonation, and it drinks surprisingly easily for its 9% ABV. Overall, Revenant is a very fine RIS with all of the flavors I look for. I may be wrong but I believe this is the first RIS that Magnify has brewed. If I'm, correct, then this is one helluva first release.
