Mind Over Matter - Coconut from Magnify Brewing. 16 oz can. Purchased from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA on 09/02/23 for $ 5.00 (Including tax) - $ 0.313/oz. In reefer at store, stored at 34 degrees at home. Reviewed 15/02/23 (Review 3041). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Printed on label “CANNED 3.1.22”. Served at 45.5 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 53.6 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, opaque with light penetration only at the edges (Ruby).
Head – Average (Maximum 2.5cm, aggressive center pour), wheat, high density, quickly receding to a 0.2 – 0.3 cm crown fed by aggressive carbonation, and a complete rocky cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 – Weak chocolate and coconut, slightly sweet. No hops, no yeast. Malt eventually creeps from behind the coconut. No vanilla.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins slightly chocolatey and sweet, with coconut showing up on the aftertaste. No hops, no yeast. No ethanol (8 % ABV as marked on label) aroma or taste. No gastric warming occurs. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Ends lightly sweet and sticky.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 While the coconut is subdued and the vanilla is nonexistent (To my taste, anyway), this is still a decent sweet/milk stout. The added lactose ramps up the milkiness and the coconut adds a bit of sweetness and balance to the potential malt bitterness.
