Draught pour at the brewery. Served in a stemless glass. The color is unusual: A dark, muddy-golden-brown. It sports a finger cap of creamy, milk-white foam and lots of thick, clinging lacing. The smell is quite mellow: primarily malty with some mild citrus and pine notes. Its taste is very bitter from the start. It's malty, earthy, and dank with a hint of pine sap. I don't taste any of the tropical fruit I expected based upon my research of Elani hops. So while the flavor is bold it is also a bit one-dimensional. The mouth feel is fairly creamy with a pleasant level of carbonation, and it seems big for the 8% ABV. Overall, this is my first experience with Elani hops. This ale isn't for everyone. I suspect there will be a wide variation in the ratings. I'm glad I was able to try it.
