Listed this as on draft, but actually just brought this back from the brewery a couple hours ago, in a 22oz bottle that was pulled from the barrel, so I figured that was basically the same thing. Poured into my Midnight Sun cervoise, the Royal RIS is dark black, with a tinge of garnet on the edges when held to light. There is a thin, light tan head that was a thick clinger leaving light scattered lace.
The aroma is on the moderate side for a RIS, chocolate and anise in front of the roasted malt.
The taste is nice and rich, with more depth then the nose indicated. Sweet, but not cloying, chocolate and lightly roasted malt, with hints of licorice and booze, and a very slight bitterness on the finish. I really like this RIS, it's the first one I've had in a while that was really good fresh, rather then being so over the top that it needs laid down a year or two to develop.
The mouthfeel is really nice, exceptionally light for an RIS.
The is one of the most drinkable RIS's I've had in memory, the fact that it is fresh makes it even more so. It has lots of depth and flavor, but is dangerously easy drinking, with almost no indication of it's ABV. A real treat! Just another reason why the residents of Homer are exceptionally lucky folks!
