Schwarzbier; meaning black beer in German, is a traditional European lager. Here at Caboose we like to put our own spin on tradition so we threw in some cherry wood smoked malt and 6 other specialty malts to make this unique brew stand out. A touch of noble hops balance the malt bill to create a smooth easy drinking lager. Perfect for sitting on the deck and welcoming the fall.

as a beer i really liked this one, but as a smoke beer, especially by this name, i definitely wanted more smoke from it, thats for sure. it has a lot of nice dark roasty malt going on, and quite a lot of body compared to more traditional takes on this style, definitely a more robust and sturdy edition than the german ones are. the smoke factor is only there a little bit though, mostly in the finish, but quite faint really. i expected a much more intense smoke experience. i like the cherry wood smoked malt though, for the most part it avoids the acrid harshness other smoked malts often bring, and its mellower in feel here too. woody more than smokey, a tiny bit of sweetness too. overall a real well made beer, not quite as interesting as i had hoped for, but well done all around. a fantastic companion to grilled bison ribeye steaks, as well as soy and other traditionally asian flavors, the salt and the grill and the light smoke and the dark malts in here all go together brilliantly. loved it in that context.

This is a hybrid beer that I think died a good job simply combining the Schwarzbier and smoked beer styles. Nothing extreme, decently balanced and drinkable. If you really dislike smoked beers, don't go for it; but if you are on the fence, try it.
Looks nice, typical dark brown that seems black, but decent amount of light shows at edges when you tip the glass. A nice off white head sat atop the brew for a wile, but eventually ended up at the edges.
Nose is light, but I get a chocolatey roasted note under the predominant but far from overpowering smoke.
Taste is similar with the smoke taking the fore, but balanced nicely by the roasted malts, I think even more than in the nose when cold. The smoke note grows a little with warmth. Carbonation is lightly prickly on this light to medium beverage.
