Pale ale brewed with Virginia pine needles

Brewed with pine needles foraged just miles away at Potomac Gorge. The breathtaking geography of The Gorge supports a massive amount of biodiversity and the rocky terrain bordering the Potomac River provides a perfect home for Pinus virginiana, the Virginia Pine.

Initial sips out of a cold can did have a home brew wort aspect to it. Luckily that faded quickly, opening a beer that starts fairly malty, runs towards citrus notes as it bitters, and ends with some pine needles lingering. This is a balanced beer that I think should be appreciated as such, though I'm a sucker for actual pine or spruce beers.

Lightly toasted malts bring sweetness and a little bready base, upon which a citrus rind marmalade gets applied. Orange, tangerine, and a sweeter ruby grapfruit come into play. Pine notes are a little sneaky, undercutting the malt and citrus, and growing up through them to gain hold of my palate. This pine adds some bitterness, but the beer never really dries out like I feel it should. Luckily it's not very heavy to begin with, so it's not a huge issue.
