in my own brewing, i have often though about what it would be like to drop a wit yeast strain into an oatmeal stout, or perhaps a burton pitch into a rice lager or something, and this is a cool example of that, apparently done by accident, but the result is an overwhelming success. this is a cool beer, an american amber as a base, with a nice tall off white head in the glass, and decent clarity. it smells like a hefe, hardly traces of the red and caramel malts at all in the nose. instead banana and white pepper rule the day, like more german than american. cool and different. the malt adds a lot in the flavor though, less sweet, more caramelized and cooked down. really distinct. the yeast gives a weightier beer a lightness though that really works, and they have carbonated it well enough to reflect that in the feel. some ingredients and flavor profiles here that are really compatible, and frankly i am surprised they have not been put together more often. this beer is extremely drinkable, and it makes sense. i hope they keep it rolling, it hints at more cool less conventional yeast and grain combinations. awesome.
