a solid, if classic to the point of being old school, take on a porter, tastes like a whole lot of others used to taste, before everyone felt the need to start putting adjuncts in their dark beers all the time. nothing really sets this apart, save a bit of an english type ale yeast thing, which may just be the house yeast here, lots of older school vibes to their beers, which some arent into but ive always found it endearing here, definitely a house flavor, more flattering in the porter here than in some others, but i generally like this place a whole lot, and not just for their beer. anyway, this is matte black with a frothy tan head on it an inch high and fading slow, rings inside the pint as it drinks, and a nose of dark roast, ash, drip coffee, and subtle licorice, dark bread, and smoke, timeless. the flavor follows, good bitterness from the dark barley, real light caramel malt type middle, and a smooth medium body, definitely a pint beer. i like that this has a cozy wintery warmth to it without being boozy in the least, and i like the depth and roast without wicked bitterness with it, baking chocolate and tobacco nuance as it warms, a baked heartiness, excellent with their clams, which are the best in boise by a mile. ill drink this one as often as they have it on tap in here, real tasty, sort of a throwback but a lot of their stuff is and im into it.

Burnt toast and freshly turned earth dominate. Tap at HH brewhouse. Sharply bitter, slightly chocolately. Short finish. Medium, smooth body. HH churns out another great beer.
